I urged #UNSC to increase funding for the women, peace & security agenda & curb military spending. More must be done to end violence against women and support their meaningful participation in peace & security processes. Women’s participation brings sustainable peace.

Today I visited a powerful @UN exhibit bringing to life the inspiring stories of women dedicating their lives to peace.
The best way to honour their strength & bravery is to ensure the meaningful participation of women in all peace & political processes.

I am alarmed to see promises made to Afghan women and girls by the Taliban being broken.
I strongly appeal to the Taliban to keep their promises to women and girls and their obligations under international human rights law.

As we mark #DayOfTheGirl, I think of the courageous and resilient girls and women I met during my visits to Afghanistan.
The hard-won gains of women and girls must be preserved and their rights must be upheld.
Without them, the Afghan economy and society will not recover.
I was honoured to be sworn into office today by @UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres as the Executive Director of @UN_Women and to take up the torch to uphold the rights of all women and girls across the world.
