Silver neck to neck with Platinum for most year to date gains.

Silver has entered a period of pronounced physical tightness, and the effects are starting to ripple through global supply chains. While headlines focus on record prices and ETF suspensions abroad, the more critical story for buyers is one of availability. Silver is increasingly difficult to source in the form and timing clients prefer — even as spot prices continue to trade normally on screen. Borrowing and lease rates have climbed to unprecedented levers (over 90% pa from ~2% pa) which is causing distributors and large banks, who often lease the metal rather than buy it, to raise metal premiums to pay for the leasing costs. What might be most concerning is that the roughly 200 million troy ounces of “free float” silver remaining in the LBMA market are about equal to the average annual global physical supply-demand deficit, which has exceeded 200 million ounces in recent years. Those remaining ounces could soon be consumed by industrial uses such as solar panel production, leaving very little physical silver available to back existing paper-based liabilities.
