Every administrative task that takes place on a screen is now up for grabs. It can all be automated. At First Light we are obsessed with eliminating waste and removing boring tasks from existence. How? We carry out an Operations Review on select roles/ processes where businesses are spending the most time behind a screen/ keyboard, then we do whatever it takes to build the solution to automate the whole thing. The investment is 33% of year 1 projected savings. That's a 4 month payback period. A 300% IRR. Basically unheard of in capital allocation decisions. Please DM me if you would like book in an operations review in April - We have two slots remaining.

AI impact update. Projects that used to take us 600 hours now take 60. We kept our margin the same, so custom software is 10x cheaper to build. Most businesses don't realise this yet. Things you ruled out as too expensive six months ago are now feasible. Anything can be built. The messier the better. Feasibility is restricted by imagination more than budgets.

1/5: Weekly, I hear from businesses wanting to automate ops—but vendors say "No API, can't do it." Truth: With a web UI, almost anything's automatable! 🚀

1/11: “All I want to know is where I'm going to die so I'll never go there.” - Charlie Munger. I have worked in an ecommerce retailer turnaround dancing with insolvency. Experiencing this near business “death” was a raw experience of this inversion thinking and an introduction to a mindset shift in financial management from gross profits to a focus on free cash flow. When a company is in distress, the most critical and immediate skill for fixing it is the ability to generate cash. Here are some ideas to generate cash. A thread >

10/11: Sell off non-core assets - Look around the premises for anything you can sell off - Cars, forklifts unused junk in the warehouse all of it. Get it in a pile and sell it off asap. Need a car or forklift - lease them. You need the cash now.

11/11: Close/consolidate - Close physical and online stores that are underperforming, move out of entire countries if underperforming, consolidate warehouses (if multiple), delete side hustles, side brands and pet projects, all of it needs to stop. Generally with overhead reduction in people a smaller office can be obtained. Sublease the old one. Sublease unused warehouse space from SKU/inventory reduction.
