Buddy Holly released the single 'Peggy Sue', September 20, 1957. The song was originally titled Cindy Lou, written by Buddy Holly in honor of his newborn niece, Cindy Lou Holley. The entire title and lyrical hook were changed to Peggy Sue as a favor to Crickets drummer Jerry Allison. Allison had recently gone through a temporary breakup with his high school girlfriend, Peggy Sue Gerron, and begged Holly to rename the track in hopes that hearing her name on the radio would convince her to take him back. Holly agreed, and the grand gesture worked: Jerry and Peggy Sue reconciled and married the following year.
