The Great Gatehouse on College Green was once the gatehouse to St Augustine’s Abbey - a precursor to Bristol Cathedral, founded in 1140. The tower was added around 1500 but the lower section dates back to 1170 - making it among the oldest man made structures standing in Bristol.

The first St Johns Church, Bedminster was built in 1003 AD, destroyed during the civil war, rebuilt in 1662, redesigned in 1855 and then destroyed in the Blitz. The outline of the 1855 church can still be seen in the former churchyard. The churchyard is now a park beside East St.

When the Bristol Hippodrome was opened in 1912, it featured a huge water tank beneath the stage. This tank could be filled with 100,000 gallons of water in order to stage naval and aquatic scenes. The tank was destroyed by a fire in the 1940s.

The Bristol Room in the Central Library is a replica of the reading room from the old library on King Street, as it would have looked circa 1740. The grandest of its fixtures is this oak overmantel, carved by the celebrated sculptor and woodworker Grinling Gibbons (1648-1721).

Somerset Square, Redcliffe was once an elegant Georgian neighbourhood but thanks to Luftwaffe bombs & 1960s town planning, all the original buildings are gone. However, this 250+ year old ornamental drinking fountain still stands as a lone reminder of the square’s grand history .
