Before the pumpkin, the jack-o'-lantern was a turnip.
This carved one is early 20th century Ireland, now in the Museum of Country Life. In the 1800s, hollowed turnips lit Halloween across Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England. American English first called a carved pumpkin a jack-o'-lantern in 1837.
What's the oldest Halloween piece on your shelf?
