THE BANKER'S GHOST STILL HAUNTS A billionaire's suspicious death. A Lebanese central banker's offshore billions. And the trail of ignored warnings that led to one of Europe's biggest financial scandals. For thirty years, one man ran Lebanon's central bank. He was celebrated at Davos. Named among the world's best central bankers. The one constant in a country of chaos. Today he sits in custody — arrested at a hospital after failing to appear for questioning — while investigators across five countries trace hundreds of millions of dollars that flowed through offshore shell companies into a Geneva vault as his country's economy collapsed and ordinary depositors were locked out of their life savings. And here's the twist: the criminal complaint that put him back in a cell was filed by the central bank he used to run. This week brought a new indictment, a second alleged offshore scheme in the Cayman Islands, and — for the first time — criminal charges against one of Lebanon's most powerful commercial bankers. We've been following this story for months. The update is below; the full investigation is linked inside it:
