#FYI I do not trust how interviews are edited, so I take this story on the 4-day week with a grain of salt. This story seems to imply that 4-day weeks result in reduced instructional time--state law requires a minimum of 1044 hours, no matter if you're on a 5-day or 4-day week---most 4-day week districts go well above this minimum. It also sounds like schools make the switch with little consideration--which I know is not true---local school boards spend months (if not years) getting feedback from local families. Short clips can be missing context that is edited out, but I know the line here from the reporter @EmilyManleyTV that "more than a dozen have returned to a five-day week" is untrue---of the 160+ to adopt, I only know of 2 that returned to the 5-day, although fewer may report being on 4 day to DESE @MOEducation (although they almost always use a 4 day week calendar). I wish there was more focus on what CAUSES schools to go to the 4-day week--you're attacking the patient because they exhibit symptoms. #Help with the teacher shortage and pay inequities between "have and have not" districts and the 4-day week will resolve itself. It's keeping teachers in the field until Missouri leaders figure out ways to attract and keep teachers in schools in ways other than a 4-day week.
