The report comes just days after the Department of Homeland Security raided a property linked to Omar as part of a criminal fraud investigation into whether her family provided false information on immigration paperwork. Historian and Oxford doctoral researcher Mohamed Haji Ingiriis claims Nur Omar Mohamed was "a full colonel in Siad Barre's military regime" and "loyal to the regime until the end" - a regime accused of killing up to 200,000 people. "Ilhan's father was never an educator," Ingiriis said. Born in Bandarbeyla, Nur reportedly joined the Somali military in the late 1960s and rose through the ranks following Barre's Soviet-backed coup in 1969. Former army officer Yusuf Ismail Faraton, who says he served with him, claims Nur led multiple brigades, served as a regiment commander, and played a "significant role" in the Somali-Ethiopian war, according to the Post. He reportedly fled only after Barre was overthrown in 1991. Under U.S. immigration law, individuals who participated in persecution are ineligible for refugee status. Ingiriis described him as a war criminal who "was the beneficiary of the military regime and should not have been given asylum whatsoever." Omar's family entered the U.S. as refugees in 1995 and settled in Minneapolis, where Nur worked as a taxi driver and postal worker before his death in June 2020 at age 67.
