🦇A huge thank you to everyone who joined Shiverpool for our Fluttering Wings Bat Walk in St James’ Cemetery Garden …🦇 The evening was a wonderful success, bringing together history, folklore, hidden corners of the cemetery and, of course, the remarkable bats that emerge above the gardens as daylight fades. Along the way we explored some of St James’ most fascinating features, from the Oratory, ancient graffiti, Huskisson’s Mausoleum and the dramatic landscape beneath Liverpool Cathedral. As darkness settled in, attention turned skywards as we introduced the group to the bats that make the gardens their home. Armed with bat detectors, sharp eyes and plenty of curiosity, the group experienced a very different side of this extraordinary Liverpool space. It was fantastic to see such enthusiasm for the wildlife, history and heritage of St James’ Cemetery Garden, and Shiverpool would like to thank everyone who came along and helped make the evening such a memorable one. Fluttering Wings will return… Stay tuned for announcements as we move into the new Spring season, with more bat walks, unusual heritage experiences and a few suitably Shiverpool surprises still to come. Using specialist Bat detectors we’ll listen out for these fluttering residents, learn more about their habitat and experience the cemetery in a completely different way🌳🌙 There will also be fascinating history delivered Shiverpool style, haunted heritage and a visit to the legendary Chalybeate Spring before the finale at the striking William Huskisson Mausoleum. One of Liverpool’s most distinctive memorials belongs to William Huskisson and its design is absolutely dripping in classical drama. William Huskisson is best known for the way he met his death- being the first recorded railway fatality in history. On 24th September 1830, Huskisson’s funeral procession left Liverpool Town Hall. It moved through streets lined with tens of thousands of spectators before reaching Duke Street around midday. Around 3,000 tickets were issued for admission to the cemetery during the funeral. Huskisson’s coffin was lowered twelve feet into the earth… Some years after his burial his monument was completed. Designed by John Foster Jr., the same architect behind St James’ Cemetery itself and the Oratory, (the solemn funerary temple looking down over this great green lung of the city.)Foster’s hand shaped some of the city’s most significant public structures. He’s actually buried next to Huskisson- talk about being buried in your work! Foster’s design was based on the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates part of that Greek Revival obsession sweeping through British architecture in the nineteenth century. Originally, it enclosed a marble statue of Huskisson by John Gibson, making it the only 19th century cemetery memorial in Liverpool to contain such a sculpture. It was later put into storage and is in the care of NML. But of course, there was controversy. A public subscription had raised nearly £3,000 for a memorial, and many subscribers expected the statue to be visible as a public monument. Instead, Gibson’s marble Huskisson was placed inside the mausoleum, where it was difficult to see. And then there was the outfit…. Gibson showed Huskisson in classical dress, standing in a Roman toga with one arm and shoulder exposed, unrolling a scroll.
