Black workers already experience lower median wages and higher unemployment than white workers and when the District goes through a recession, Black workers fare worse in every economic measure.

“Sinking scarce dollars into a failed operation is happening at a time when Americans across the country, but particularly D.C. residents, are facing an affordability crisis,” said @TazraMitchell, chief policy officer at the D.C. Fiscal Policy Institute.

This is a really great, informative resource!
Property tax is one of DC’s largest sources of local revenue. By building a system based on ability to pay—with the wealthiest paying the greatest share of taxes —the District can build an economy of shared abundance.

DC residents deserve leaders that'll put all options on the table to avert what would've been the largest cut to the safety net in a generation & protect vulnerable communities. That's what Council aimed to solve, even if they fell short in some areas.

DC Council is creating new tax breaks for developers to build housing & commercial space—in return, they must build some affordable housing, prioritize hiring DC residents & contract w/ DC businesses BUT the tax breaks lack clawbacks to ensure that happens bit.ly/441vTyI
The Committee on Human Services added clawbacks to Housing in Downtown and Office to Anything in the Budget Support Act. There’s no reason @ChmnMendelson shouldn’t add common sense accountability measures to all new tax breaks.

Replying to @charlesallen
@charlesallen: “Simply saying the word growth over and over again is not the same as supporting it." Thx for speaking on economic growth w/moral clarity. We must reject the notion that growth alone will put DC on sound fiscal footing, esp if there’s no plan for inclusive growth.
The Council does this while cutting essential programs and services that help residents with low incomes make ends meet. dcfpi.org/all/years-of-top-d……
The Council won’t even consider averting some of these cuts through a wealth proceeds tax - a small tax increase on wealthy residents who got a windfall from the Trump tax cuts – which is based on an existing federal tax and has worked in other states. dcfpi.org/all/dc-can-raise-1…

Mayor Bowser wants to cut DC's paid leave program so workers can't take paid leave for their own or a loved one's serious illness or injury from Oct 1, 2026-Sept 30, 2027. Medical needs don't take a year off and neither should DC's paid leave program. nbcwashington.com/video/loca…
