I was invited to a Haiwaiin themed party the other weeked and was immediately very concerned about the potential for cultural appropriation. In the end, I decided to play it safe and just go as Barack Obama.
On Monday Dec 9, I'll be moderating an online academic panel on the application of settler colonialism to Zionism. What does it mean to suggest Israel is a settler colony, especially given its unique context? Free and all welcome - register now events.humanitix.com/the-set…

I live by Columbia. Tonight I went for a walk & saw 10+ blocks rapidly barricaded, dozens of police vehicles flying by, large groups of NYPD in riot gear gathering.
I study protest in E Europe. What I saw tonight was some of the most wildly disproportionate policing I've seen

The claim that Hamas is responsible not only for its own atrocities but also every atrocity committed by Israel has to be one the most disingenuous and morally bankrupt talking points of this whole horrific episode.

The Israeli government is saying very clearly that if it is up to them, they will never, ever allow a Palestinian state, which means de facto apartheid rule over half the population within its claimed borders in perpetuity. Doesn't matter how loudly they say it, we're incapable of hearing it here:

The first Palestinian person I ever met was my junior year in Germany. He was a medical student named Nimr living on the floor of my apartment building, and for weeks, he wouldn’t talk to me. At one point I asked him why he wouldn’t talk to me, and he said because I was American.

Not an Aquinas scholar, but find it highly dubious that Roman Catholicism's leading mind would not find legitimate authority in an international organization
There has always been tension between the national and the international.
Thomas Aquinas made it clear that legitimate authority belonged to the state rather than to an international organization.

There’s not a lot to cheer about in this article but I am nonetheless proud of the work (1/10) cambridge.org/core/journals/…

This is from Lila Abu-Lughod's 2002 'Do Muslim Women Need Saving?' - An important reminder to beware the cultural explanations of what is transpiring in Afghanistan that bypass history, silo nations, and offset accountability!

Seems like a good time to remind people of Lila Abu-Lughod's article "Do Muslim Women Need Saving?" An important reminder that the Bush administration weaponized this notion of salvation at the beginning of the "War on Terror." jstor.org/stable/3567256
