Algae can be red,
and even a shade of blue.
We love algae for lots of reasons,
not least that they store CO2!
Happy Valentine's Day from SAMS.

Look at this! Hitchhiking algae. Among the plankton is this copepod with an epizoic diatom bloom growing upon its body. But, what is the relationship? @zeiss_micro

PhD student Ellie Murphy created this amazing, intricate Christmas tree using marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum. This model species is used frequently in our labs notably to investigate cellular mechanisms using molecular techniques like crispr-cas9 gene editing @thembauk

Thats great @CPRSurvey @thembauk to have Prof. Reid to speak on the evolution of the CPR and its datasets to celebrate the last 90 years! Looking forward to it! #CPR90
#CPR90 Speaker announcement!
Prof Chris Reid, former @CPRSurvey Director & world-renowned research scientist will be taking us through the evolution of the CPR Survey, from 1931 to present day - a fantastic introduction for all.

Looking forward to kicking off our biological oceanographic survey of #HABs aboard #RVCelticVoyager We will be focusing on the #PSP causative organism #Alexandrium by microscopy, molecular and toxin analysis, and #Karenia using @noaacoastalsci developed #habscope @RVMarineInst

We've just finalised & made available all 2019 CPR data! This is a phenomenal achievement; #Covid19 forced many labs to pause sampling efforts, but thanks to support from the intl. shipping community & huge efforts from the CPR Survey team, the Survey continued uninterrupted!

Our final project meeting is underway.
The team will be presenting on how we have established more readily available #HAB forecasting tools for industry and academia, while increasing our knowledge of HAB events.

"Data services has been a key concept of PRIMROSE," says @PeterIMiller.
The project has produced a series of interface services that can be used across nations of western #Europe.
Project leader @Crimsonestra summing up the project successes and looking to the future of #HAB #forecasting:
"We're entering into a very important time where we can start mining data and using it to our advantage in predicting harmful algal blooms."

🔬The HABscope, developed by NOAA with funding from NASA, consists of a #microscope with an iPod attached, embedded with artificially intelligent software to identify the swimming pattern of the #phytoplankton Karenia. 🌊 @nuigalway #Marine #Algalbloom bit.ly/2Uu81Di
Our partner institute @SAMSoceannews is deploying a FlowCytobot off Shetland. The device photographs algae and through machine learning can identify certain types.
The technology could be a game changer for #HABForecast and #harmfulalgae research.
#Innovation to improve algal bloom forecasting
The FlowCytobot device is being developed to detect early warnings of harmful bloom formations, simply by taking a photo 📸
It uses similar tech to facial recognition software
