Those studying AGI refuse to consider that the mind evolved to be highly specialized with massive ‘domain-specific’ innate circuitry. They refuse because they think evolved specialization is antithetical to GENERAL intelligence. In fact, this highly specialized circuitry is precisely what enables general intelligence. It’s counterintuitive, but computational constraints enable general (broad) problem solving.

Not too shabby for Cape Breton!
Upon completion of the full build, the EverWind Point Tupper site could place @AnthropicAI’s 5th largest source of compute in Nova Scotia. 🏗️🇨🇦

I had fun talking to Robert K about the many feels he reviews in his new book. Especially re hidden feels we don't usually notice.
Robin Hanson read All the Feels and came to our conversation with some hard questions. Didn’t I miss some feelings? What about religious feelings? Why do people pay to feel the fear and grief they experience when they watch certain movies? Full conversation link in the reply.

If you're wondering what the frontier labs mean when they say "RSI" (recursive self improvement) is coming within the next 12 months, it's this: - Labs define RSI as the models making models better - 100% of experiment coding is now automated - 95% of experiment execution is now automated - 20% of experiment ideation is now automated The last bullet is the current bottleneck. As we've seen with nearly all definable benchmarks -- if we can reach 20%, we can reach 100%. The current way to measure experiment ideation is on fixed-point synthetic evals. "How many times does AI have to try before it can reproduce a known-thing?" This is not a great way to capture the true essence of RSI which I believe is about open-endedness -- asking the right questions no one has ever asked. No one has formalized this, much less in eval form. (We are trying with ARC-AGI!) The current paradigm of RSI is probably best understood as trying to find a recipe for self-improvement within a specific domain. But assuming we find it in the next 12 months, without more breakthroughs on generalization or open-endedness, we (AI + humans) are going to need to keep collaborating to scale that recipe horizontally into other data domains.

String theory is what happens when an intelligent system is starved of sensory input and starts hallucinating. Intelligence needs grounding. For this reason, intelligence is practically never the bottleneck to solving impactful problems. The bottleneck is iterated contact with reality.

New essay! Everyone agrees scientists can’t be objective. Activist-scientists say honesty means leaning in: declare your biases and argue them out like a courtroom. But courtrooms need a defense to show up and a neutral referee. Social psych has neither. open.substack.com/pub/michae…

I think we will find consciousness is not a "thing" but many things working together that solved many problems. I don't believe substrate matters but just emerging from complexity is wrong also.

"I often hear, that if tokens get cheaper, demand will go up. That’s Jevons Paradox. Sure, elasticity works. But if prices drop 90%, demand must increase 900% just to stay flat. Remember when internet demand grew while debt-laden Global Crossing spectacularly failed because prices dropped too fast? Historically, semiconductors got 30% cheaper every year. When prices dropped by more than 50%, disaster struck with fabrication plant closings and company failures."

The idea was to account not just for all emotions, but for every feeling that humans have, broadly. My proposal is that they all can be understood using the same framework: they measure something and they motivate behavior.

Nice to see some evolutionary psychologists tapping the sign: "Intelligence is not a general, all-purpose capacity that allows for adaptive processing of all types of information across every domain." sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
