This day is profoundly painful for so many New Yorkers. It marks three years since the horrific war crimes of October 7. On that day, Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others. We grieve alongside our many friends and neighbors who still carry that unthinkable loss.
The suffering did not begin nor end that day. It instead continued through the Israeli government’s devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza, in which it has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians—including more than 21,000 children. Even since the so-called ceasefire, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed. That suffering has intensified with every Israeli bomb dropped on ambulances waiting outside hospitals, every drone strike targeting a residential building or journalist, and every shipment of food aid turned away at a border crossing. Many New Yorkers are reckoning with this unbearable grief, and we mourn alongside them – all while knowing that our tax dollars fund these war crimes.
Three years later, we must refuse to accept a world in which occupation and apartheid continue, where war crimes are met with impunity, and our federal government continues its complicity with every arms shipment.
To honor the dead, we must fight for a world in which every person can live with freedom, safety, and dignity.

My boss - the editor - at Dawn many years ago told me that if you raise your voice and shout during an argument then the argument will be greatly weakened - compared to when you say it calmly and without the slightest bit of anger
Najam Sethi’s brutal takedown of the argument used by Indian media and in particular Rajdeep Sardesai here is a good example of that

That’s huge coming from Nasser Hussain. Finally cricketing voices are speaking up again about the BCCI’s hegemony over the game. Only a true lover of cricket has the courage to call out the naked truth without fearing cancellation or backlash. The rest of the so called OGs are just busy securing a comfortable retirement.
Hats off 👍

What a stupid debate! The fact that she doesn't know about Fawad and Bilal Bhai as musicians is the real alarming thing in all of this. This season of the Idol is doing well and we'll see all these people craving for attention. I love the panel. All bases covered. 👍🏼

Trying to bring this to the attention of UK Foreign Secretary @DavidLammy who is - as yet - unresponsive.
(Annoyingly, I don’t seem to be as well connected & in control as the conspiracy theorists in Pakistan suggest I am)
In the last few weeks there have been serious and concerning developments regarding my sons’ father, Imran Khan’s treatment in prison. The Pakistan authorities have stopped all visits to him by his family and his lawyers. They have also postponed all court hearings. In addition to cutting off in- person visits, and in defiance of a court order, his weekly calls to his sons, Sulaiman and Kasim Khan, who are British and who live in London, were stopped on 10th September. We have received reports that the authorities have now turned off the lights and electricity in his cell and he is no longer allowed to leave his cell at any time. The jail cook has been sent on leave. He is now completely isolated, in solitary confinement, literally in the dark, with no contact with the outside world. His lawyers are concerned about his safety and well-being.
These actions come in the context of ongoing targeting of Imran’s family, as well as his party (PTI) members and supporters in an attempt to silence them and all political opposition in Pakistan. Imran’s nephew, Hassan Niazi, a civilian, has been detained in military custody since August 2023. More recently, Imran Khan’s sisters, Uzma and Aleema Khan, who have continued to speak out on his behalf, have also been arrested as they made their way peacefully to a demonstration and they are currently being held in jail, despite there being no proper or lawful basis for their imprisonment.
In June this year the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found that Imran is unlawfully and arbitrarily detained and called for his immediate release.
As a matter of urgency , we are calling for Imran Khan’s release, and for the release of his sisters and nephew as well as for his sons’ contact with their father to be re-established, so that they may have assurance first-hand that he is well and not being mistreated.

Anyone with a first grade understanding of Arabic knows that “sabaya” just refers to a bunch of girls or women. It doesn’t mean captive and it has no “sexual connotation”. Your gym teacher would say, sabaya catch the ball. Get a grip, @shira_rubin and @washingtonpost: fact check your authors before embarrassing yourselves
