This is a summary of what happened so far in Russell Brand’s rape and sexual assault trial. The day began with the jury watching 20 minutes of a pre-recorded police interview with Brand’s third accuser, who alleges he orally raped her in a Soho bar in July 2004. She was then cross-examined by Russell Brand’s lawyer, Ian Winter KC. The alleged assault: The woman told police she first met Brand at a party at the Nordic Bar in Soho in the summer of 2004. She knew who he was because he was already well-known for presenting a Big Brother spin-off show. She alleged that after speaking to him for no more than a minute, Brand grabbed her breasts, giving her what she described as a “weird maniacal grin”. She said he then grabbed her arm and dragged her into a nearby toilet. She told police that Brand stood on the toilet seat before pulling her towards him and putting his penis in her mouth. She alleged that she tried to resist and that he told her, “Don’t be a spoilsport,” or words to that effect. She said he ejaculated into her mouth. The woman described freezing in shock and imagining people asking her why she had not bitten him. She said she felt threatened by the force he used and the look in his eyes, although she did not feel her life was in danger. She suggested his celebrity status may have influenced how she perceived the threat. She said she closed her eyes and tried to mentally detach herself from what was happening, believing that complying might prevent him from attempting further sexual acts against her. She described it as a survival response, saying she wanted to do what he wanted so she could get out of the situation. She recalled banging on the locked toilet door and believing that a man outside may have called out to ask whether everything was all right. What happened afterwards: The woman alleged that once they left the toilet, Brand acted as though nothing had happened and suggested they exchange phone numbers. She said she walked around the bar feeling numb, trying unsuccessfully to find someone she knew. She was then steered into a car and found herself sitting next to Brand, still in shock. She alleged that Brand had his penis out in the car and told her, “Come on and suck it.” She said two men were sitting in the front seats and questioned how they could not have witnessed what was happening. She told Brand no, and said he accepted her refusal. After leaving the party, she got out of the car in Camden and tried to find a taxi home. She recalled calling a friend and telling him that Brand had tried to make her perform a sexual act. According to her account, the friend replied, “That’s attempted rape.” She said she did not tell him that Brand had allegedly succeeded in orally raping her because she felt ashamed and did not want people to judge her. She admitted that she had altered the account at the time because she struggled to acknowledge what had happened. She also said she later warned the man who had organised the party that Brand was a “sexual predator”, telling him that he had tried to sexually assault her and put his penis in her mouth. Her recollection of the evening: The woman said she arrived at the party at around 7pm and that Brand turned up several hours later. She estimated that she had consumed six or seven drinks, mainly vodka, lime and soda, and described herself as drunk but not paralytic. She said she was not falling over or slurring her words and had finished drinking at the bar while speaking to Brand. She explained that she did not report the alleged rape to police at the time because she believed it would be her word against his. She said she subsequently went out of her way to avoid Brand whenever she saw him, adding that he probably would not have recognised her.
