Three years ago, Hamas terrorists carried out the deadliest attack on the Jewish people since the Holocaust. More than 1,000 people were murdered. Children, parents and grandparents were dragged into Gaza as hostages. Families were torn apart in a single morning.
Today I stand with Toronto's Jewish community in remembering every life lost, and the hostages and families whose suffering did not end that day.
That hatred did not stay thousands of kilometres away. Here in Toronto, schools have been shot at, synagogues and Jewish businesses vandalized, families harassed in their own neighbourhoods. Too many Jewish residents have told me they no longer feel safe being visibly Jewish in the city they call home.
Antisemitism is not the Jewish community's problem to confront alone. It demands leadership. There can be no excuses for celebrating terrorism on our streets, and no looking the other way when Jewish Torontonians are threatened. As mayor, hate will be met with consequences, not excuses.
I have stood with this community at vigils and in synagogues. I have sat with families who buried their children and with families fighting to bring their loved ones home. They asked only that the world not forget.
Remembering October 7 is about the kind of city we choose to be. I choose a Toronto where Jewish residents can live openly and proudly. A Toronto everyone can be safe in.
May the memories of those murdered be a blessing, and may we build a Toronto where antisemitism has no home.

Avi Lewis is the leader of a Canadian political party. And this is how he chose to address Canadian Jews on Yom Kippur.
Avi is free to spend Yom Kippur atoning for his own sins. He does not get to invent sins and confess to them on behalf of the rest of us.
First, Israel’s war is not being fought “in our name.” Canadian Jews do not command the IDF and are not responsible for the decisions of the Israeli government.
Second, there is no genocide. This is a war Israel was forced to fight against a genocidal terrorist army.
There is something especially gross about a political leader using the holiest day of the Jewish year to grovel before the world.

Tonight Yom Kippur begins, the most sombre moment of the Jewish calendar. It’s a time of atonement - a time to grieve those who have been lost, a time to acknowledge and take responsibility for harms we have caused, individually and collectively. For Jewish people, the personal has always been political and the political always personal. This year I'm reflecting on the fact that we failed to do our part to stop an ongoing genocide committed in our name. There are many other fronts where I have to do the work of repair. But nothing on this scale.

On Monday, Montreal city council votes on a motion to cut the city's ties with Israel. I am speaking up because this motion is dangerous for Montreal, and my reason has nothing to do with which side of that war you are on.
My family arrived in Montreal in 1956 as refugees. This city gave us safety, dignity and the chance to build. That promise has drawn generations of immigrants here from every corner of the world.
I am not going to debate a war on the other side of the world, and that is exactly the point. A municipal government has no jurisdiction over foreign policy. Cities do not end wars.
But a motion like this lands right here at home. Jewish Montrealers are less than one percent of this city and the number one target of hate crimes. Those are police statistics, not opinions. Our synagogues and schools have been targeted, and families I know are scared in a way I have never seen.
When city hall singles out one community's connection to a foreign conflict, it brings no peace anywhere. It brings fear here.
Montreal has real emergencies. Housing. Homelessness. Infrastructure. That is the job.
This city has been a safe haven for my family and so many others, and it must remain one for everyone. @SorayaMartinezF showed real leadership in June. Council should reject this motion on Monday.

This feels like a good moment to remember that Ireland got rich not by producing much or innovating anything, but mostly by becoming one of the world's biggest tax havens -- by enabling large companies from other nations to hide their tax revenues from their home nations.
Apple, Microsoft and Google have routed many hundreds of billions of dollars through Ireland to shelter their profits.
Israel, in contrast, got rich by innovating at a colossal scale. It spends 6% of its GDP on R&D, the highest of any nation on Earth. 10% of its workforce works in tech.
That's why those same Apple, Microsoft and Google all built massive R&D centers in Israel, alongside 500 other multinationals. The defense tech is famous, but Israel is also a global powerhouse in water and agriculture. And it draws 10% of global deep-tech investment in medical devices and food R&D.
So a tax-cheat nation that got rich by impoverishing others now refuses a safety system meant to land planes safely in the fog from a nation that actually produces new and useful things for the world.
It's one thing not to buy arms, or to exact political costs for a war you hate. This isn't that. This is just sanctimonious narcissism.
Take the fog safety system, you preening tax-cheats. We promise to look the other way.

100% there is no genocide in Gaza. No eradication project. People confused about what the word means is culturally appalling and dangerous for the future of western society. The confusion has indeed been engineered by people know what they are doing. No genocide does not mean simply too much death and destruction in war. I am Canadian. I am Jewish. I am the daughter of a Holocaust survivor and child of immigrants from the former Soviet Union. I understood, immediately, on October 8, that what was happening on the streets of Toronto, and elsewhere in Canada, was serious. Really serious. And every day since, that concern has become more pronounced. And I saw these things not because I am a prophet, but because I pay attention. I see what is there, not what I want to see. And I understand history. I’m very unsentimental about it all.
Since Bondi many people have begun to understand, more than two years on, that the extreme antisemitism that exploded in Canada on October 7 was dreadfully serious. Quite a few have written to me lately, expressing dismay. But it was all there. Plain as day.
Even in Europe, police were more proactive in managing public order and Jew hating incitement and violence engaged in by Islamists and “progressives.” Europe understands what happens when antisemitism flourishes.
And Canadians? They became jurisdictional experts overnight. The constant Criminal Code infringements? A new cohort of legal geniuses pontificated: “municipal issue.”
Pardon my language but…if u don’t know what you’re talking about then stfu. The violence and incitement in 🇨🇦 have been licensed and emboldened at every level of leadership and law enforcement. Right up to the Prime Minister.
The nerve. For Mark Carney to show up at a candle lighting event, mere hours after Bondi, affecting solemnity. But the same man stokes the raging antisemitism with his ignorant policies. Who is going to have the moral conviction to say: “Muslim values are not Canadian values.” We have values. We used to, anyways. We were a tolerant country in which diversity was managed. Integration took time.
My parents? Loved Canada. And always taught their children to love 🇨🇦. Work hard. Don’t complain. And be grateful that you live in such a peaceful place.
They would never, ever, in their craziest moments, have taken to the streets to denounce everything about their new, beautiful home. They would never have had the audacity to spit in the faces of those who built and contributed to Canada. Never.
I’m glad some Canadians are finally seeing the light. But I really do fear that it may be too late. And I have to ask: what took you so long?
