The forceful detention of @RahulGandhi, @Priyanka Gandhi, @yadavakhilesh and other Opposition leaders during their protest is a severe affront to our democracy. Physical aggression against a peaceful protest is completely unjustifiable. An accountable government listens to dissent; it does not silence it through police action. This is not the India our Constitution envisages! We must never allow this appalling conduct to become the new normal.
VIDEO | As Congress MP Shashi Tharoor arrives at the protest site at Jantar Mantar, he says, "The Leader of the Opposition being dragged off physically and put in detention and other MPs as well and now frankly this is something that has moved the hearts and consciences of everybody in our country. I wanted to stand in solidarity with the students who are protesting here so I've come to see them.,, I think it's a democratic right to protest. It's non-violent protest. No one is trying to do anything that that is against the law. So I don't understand why the government is behaving with such insensitivity. The brutal lathi charge, the horrendous behaviour of the police and today the physical dragging away of the LoP, Rahul Gandhi. All of this I think has caused a lot of dismay to law-abiding citizens of this country." He further says, "This is not how we expect our government to deal with protests, with dissidents, with people who are demanding justice. These young students after all they worked hard for their exams, they studied hard and they were betrayed by the system. They were betrayed by the government that runs the system and they have every right to protest. The government should be accountable. The government cannot conceal its lack of accountability behind the police action and that too very brutal police action." (Full video available on PTI Videos - ptivideos.com)

🧬Possibly one of the most important genetics preprints of 2026 has just been published: the flagship paper of the Vertebrate Genomes Project. An ambitious effort to generate near-complete and near-error-free reference genomes for all living vertebrate species. The authors present 816 high-quality reference genomes covering around 95% of major vertebrate evolutionary lineages. Most assemblies are at chromosome-level quality and some are fully diploid telomere-to-telomere genomes. Using this resource the authors reconstructed the genome of the last common ancestor of vertebrates, studied the evolution of sex chromosomes, explored 3D genome organization and compared epigenetic landscapes across hundreds of species. This dataset will likely become a foundational platform for evolutionary biology and comparative genomics. biorxiv.org/content/10.64898… #VGP #evolution #ComparativeGenomics #vertebrates #genomes

Can spleen stiffness measurement help to detect portal hypertension? A very important paper just published in @LancetGastroHep shows that, in combination with liver stiffness, platelets & BMI, it predicts the presence of clinically significant portal hypertension. PMID: 39326431

Excited to see a standalone PRS paper for large-scale Taiwanese cohort in a duo of flagship papers (nature.com/articles/s41586-0… and nature.com/articles/s41586-0…). Even more thrilled to see PRSmix+ (via cross-trait integration) yields consistent performance across different target traits!

So true @rabataller there’s seems to be an extraordinary push for MASLD in literature as well as social media overshadowing #ALD to the point of neglect - grave consequences ahead
Honored to speak today in Porto invited by my friend @JosPresa3 about controversies in MASLD and MetALD terminology. Here is a preview slide and the 5 main controversies. SLD meetings emphasize MASLD, talk about MetALD, while ALD gets little attention. This imbalance matters.

I often bring up smoking when discussing patients with alcohol-related cirrhosis in our transplant committee. Why? Because alcohol + tobacco massively increase cancer risk. ➡️ Esophagus ~×7 ➡️ Head & neck ~×4 ➡️ Lung ~×2 This is why abstinence & support matter. ⬇️

New clinical trial results: STEP 11 📄🧪 💊 Semaglutide demonstrates 16% weight loss ⚖️⬇️ in adults in South Korea 🇰🇷 and Thailand 🇹🇭, defined as BMI > 25. 📊 These results have meaningful clinical 🩺 and policy 🏛️ implications for Asian countries, where lower BMI thresholds define obesity compared to other populations. 👥 In Asian populations: BMI > 23 = overweight BMI > 25 = obesity (per WHO 🌍) This is because at a given BMI, Asian populations are at greater risk of obesity-related complications ❤️🫀🧠, due to higher % visceral body fat compared to European populations.
