When I was growing up, my dad would very quickly get bored of me. He'd often ask me how my day was and then walk away mid-sentence. Later in my 20s I dated guys who rushed me when I talked. Something I've noticed in the last few years is how safe I feel with ppl who are conversationally patient (e.g. who ask me about mundane things and then listen to my full answer). The same ppl seem to expect relationships to take time. They don’t write ppl off too quickly or push too hard for “progress” in the relationship. I do suspect there's a neurological aspect to rushing both conversations and relationships. Speaking for myself and the kind of brain I have, patience isn't a natural trait of mine. I imagine there’s a balance to strike there (every weakness has an opposite strength, so it’s not like we’d want a world where everyone’s maxxed out on the same traits). But I do really think that cultivating patience is huge boon for connection and love.
