Australia: The last shipyard in Victoria capable of building and maintaining large military vessels is being sold to a developer part-owned by a Hong Kong company.
The strategically-located Williamstown shipyard overlooks the entrance to the Port of Melbourne, the busiest container port in Australia.
The shipyard dates to 1858 and constructed all ten ANZAC class frigates for Australia and New Zealand, as well as the superstructure and internal fitout of Australia’s two Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) vessels, HMAS Canberra and Adelaide.
Currently owned by BAE Systems Australia (BAESA), the last work at the yard wrapped up in 2016. Much of the staff were laid off and the site was put up for sale in 2024 with an estimated price tag of up to $200 million.
While its future is unknown, state legislation requires it to remain used for marine engineering.
BAESA have confirmed the sale process is underway but declined to comment until the process has concluded. The company purchasing the site is EMKC3, an Australian based property funds management business that is part-owned by EMKC Group based in Hong Kong.
It is not known whether EMKC Group is the majority owner of EMKC3.
“EMKC3 is the contracted purchaser of the BAE Williamstown site and has been working with key stakeholders on a range of future uses for the site,” said Felicity Richardson, Senior Development Manager at EMKC3. “As per the terms of the sale contract, we won’t be providing further commentary at this stage.”

Simon Andriesz, the British banker who uncovered 2018 emails linking Howard Lutnick to Jeffrey Epstein’s Adfin investment and took them to House Oversight, has died at age 57. BBC reported his findings. Lutnick later admitted to visiting the island but not the business dealings.
Simon Andriesz @SAndriesz has died. He took his own life this week, while staying at a trauma treatment centre, the same place he had gone to try to survive what years of fighting had done to him.
I wrote the piece below about him at the start of August. We last spoke on 13 August. Reading my own words back now feels different. Heavier. I did not know then that this would be the last chapter.
Simon gave me his story directly. The embezzlement he uncovered, the fraud he reported, the heart attacks, the police complaints, the years @TheFCA spent doing almost nothing while his life fell apart around him.
He handed the CFTC and HMRC enough to secure real fines. He handed the BBC enough for a full documentary.
And still the one regulator that was supposed to protect him let him carry all of it alone for 7 years.
He was one of the most credible people I have ever spoken to. Everything he told me checked out. And he still ended up broken by the very system meant to catch people like him when they fell.
I am angry writing this. Angry that a man this capable, this thorough, this willing to hand over evidence and testimony for years, was left to fight completely alone until he could not fight anymore.
Simon Andriesz deserved better. Rest in peace.
