American Bridge 21st Century is the partisan machinery behind the story. It is a major Democratic opposition-research operation, super PAC, and dark-money network founded by Democratic operative David Brock.
Its nonprofit arm, AB Foundation, is a 501(c)(4) that does not publicly identify its underlying donors. Its 2024 revenue exploded from $6 million to $74.6 million, entirely from contributions.
That foundation sent $26.55 million to AB PAC, American Bridge’s federal political committee, for political activity. It also gave $23.5 million to American "Independent" Media, a progressive political-news organization that operates the Michigan Independent.
AB PAC raised ~$97.7 million and spent $97.4 million during the 2024 cycle, including $58.6 million in independent expenditures. Through July 31, 2026, the PAC reported another $40.5 million in receipts
The Detroit Metro Times article openly admits that American Bridge supplied the research. The reporter says he independently verified the votes and quotations, but the article excludes the most damaging fact for American Bridge’s argument... Rogers offered an amendment funding the existing responder-health program at $150 million annually, the amount requested in Obama’s own FY2011 budget. The amendment also included outreach, data collection, eligibility verification, and annual financial reporting. It failed 19–30.
This was not an isolated submission. The same Metro Times reporter has published several recent Mike Rogers attacks built from American Bridge research:

American Bridge then republishes and promotes those articles as supposedly independent news. The process is straightforward
1. A Democratic opposition group selects damaging information.
2. It hands the material to a local publication.
3. The publication verifies the selected facts but omits contrary context.
4. American Bridge circulates the finished article as outside validation of its attack.
