🚨 TACOMA'S $50 MILLION CANCER CENTER — FOLLOW THE MONEY!
A proposed $50 MILLION, three-story, 125,000-square-foot cancer center at 602 N. Orchard St., Tacoma, would replace the Village at 6th and Orchard, a 39-home emergency tiny-house shelter operating since December 2020.
The October 8, 2026 development filing also describes approximately 440 parking spaces.
WHO'S BEHIND THE PROJECT?
🏛️ Property owner: First Christian Church of Tacoma — 6.6 acres.
💰 Project applicant: South Sound CARE Foundation, a nonprofit supporting cancer research and clinical trials.
🏗️ Developer: Rush Development / The Rush Companies, based in Gig Harbor.
🏥 Reported healthcare partners: MultiCare Health System and Northwest Medical Specialties (NWMS).
🏠 Existing shelter operator: Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI).
NOW FOLLOW THE TAXPAYER MONEY!
According to reporting by The News Tribune, public spending and commitments for the existing homeless village include:
💵 CITY OF TACOMA: Approximately $2.5 MILLION through 2025.
💵 PIERCE COUNTY: More than $1.3 MILLION covering July 2023 through June 2026.
🚨 COMBINED: MORE THAN $3.8 MILLION IN REPORTED PUBLIC SPENDING AND COMMITMENTS!
These amounts concern the existing shelter, not construction of the cancer center. They are not a final audited expenditure total.
ANOTHER FUNDING RECORD:
Pierce County's published 2025–2026 homeless housing awards identify $297,692 for LIHI's 6th and Orchard Village.
That award must be reconciled against the larger county total, NOT automatically added on top of the $3.8 million.
AND NOW THE SHELTER HAS TO MOVE?
In August 2026, LIHI informed a Pierce County committee that the 39-home village needed to relocate by December.
At that time, LIHI was still searching for a new location and needed funding for relocation and operations.
SIX QUESTIONS TAXPAYERS DESERVE ANSWERED:
Who is paying to relocate all 39 tiny homes?
What will transportation, site preparation, utilities, permits, and new infrastructure cost?
Will Tacoma or Pierce County approve additional taxpayer funding?
What happens to the public investment already made at the Orchard property?
What are the purchase price and land-sale terms between First Christian Church and the cancer-center project?
Will the redevelopment receive public grants, tax incentives, infrastructure assistance, or other government benefits?
HERE'S THE DISTINCTION:
The proposed $50 million cancer center is described as privately financed.
But that does NOT answer who will pay to relocate the existing publicly supported shelter.
The $3.8 million-plus figure represents previously reported shelter spending and commitments, NOT confirmed relocation costs.
The relocation budget, final destination, and funding responsibilities remain unresolved in the records reviewed.
Cancer care is important. So is transparency over public money.

Any credible allegation of voter fraud should be taken seriously and investigated.
That being said, the action by Trump’s DOJ — charging just 28 individuals — suggests they have no evidence to back up their claims just last week of TENS or HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of illegally registered voters.
Yes, non-citizen voter registration and voting does happen in isolated instances — in California and the rest of the country alike — but it is so rare that the Trump admin is parading around town about .0001% of California voters.
If the feds were serious about this, they would have done this long ago — not in the middle of people voting, which inherently and needlessly sows distrust and doubt in our democracy.
