The Moon is a disc of hidden books. Reach an arm into it and feel around with your hands and you bring out books already written and many books yet to be written for the Moon holds past, present, future. - Carl Sandburg

Monday 2 November 1663 Up, and by coach to White Hall, and there in the long Matted Gallery* I find Sir G. Carteret, Sir J. Minnes, and Sir W. Batten — and by and by comes the King to walk there with three or four with him; and soon as he saw us, says he, “Here is the Navy Office,” and there walked twenty turns the length of the gallery, talking, methought, but ordinary talke. By and by came the Duke, and he walked, and at last they went into the Duke’s lodgings. The King staid so long that we could not discourse with the Duke, and so we parted. I heard the Duke say that he was going to wear a perriwigg; and they say the King also will. I never till this day observed that the King is mighty gray.** Thence, meeting with Creed, walked with him to Westminster Hall, and thence by coach took up Mrs. Hunt, and carried her towards my house, and we light at the ’Change, and sent her to my house, Creed and I to the Coffeehouse, and then to the ’Change, and so home, and carried a barrel of oysters with us, and so to dinner, and after a good dinner left Mrs. Hunt and my wife making marmalett of quinces, and Creed and I to the perriwigg makers, but it being dark concluded of nothing, and so Creed went away, and I with Sir W. Pen, who spied me in the street, in his coach home. *Named for floor mats of reeds or rushes, often mixed with herbs or wormwood to repel lice and freshen the air, the Long/Matted Gallery was a first-floor corridor above the Stone Gallery. It served as a key walking and waiting space for officials and the King. Sam walked its rafters by candlelight during 1668 repairs. The gallery was destroyed in the April 1691 fire that began in the Duchess of Portsmouth’s lodgings at its end. **This marks a cultural turning point: the moment when the English court, led by the King and Duke, begins the long era of male periwigs that would dominate fashion for over a century. “marmalett of quinces” Quince marmalade (or marmalett) was a firm, sliceable preserve made by boiling hard, astringent quinces (yellow fruits that often resemble lumpy pears) with sugar until thick. Derived from the Portuguese marmelada, it ranked among luxury sweetmeats (candied fruits, jellies, marmalades, pastes) in 17th-century England, prized for long preservation and as a digestive. Joan Ferrer Miró (1850-1931), "Public Exhibition of a Picture", c. 1888 "Ferrer Miró was one of the people who introduced anecdotal realism into our country following a stay in Italy during the 1870s. On his return to Barcelona he shared a studio with Romà Ribera and accepted the demands of a public eager for artistic manifestations reflecting the habits of the nascent local bourgeoisie. Here the painter depicts the shop window of the future gallery or exhibition room, for which he won a Gold Medal at the 1888 Universal Exposition."

"The monk is represented as a Dominican mendicant, who begs instead of working, even though he has his shoulder-bag already filled with food. His right hand tightly holds on to it. In addition, he begs for money and carries a purse on his belt as well as holding out a money-box with his left hand. The monk is depicted as utterly shocked about having to let go of these possessions, and so resistant and strong that Death has trouble overpowering him by pulling his cappa. In the background there is the ruined wall of a building connected to an elaborate portal, as well as a portentous, stormy sky. This appears to suggest that the mendicant returns to a declining monastery, which causes God's anger and divine punishment. As we have seen, there had long been rampant criticism against the mendicants by Erasmus and others. Lutherans argued against any notion that poverty was sanctified. Mendicants were portrayed as the greediest and laziest men of all, and Holbein supports this interpretation in underlining the real danger of this order to society."
This monk is being seized by death so it's good to see that he's got his reading material with him, safely ensconced in his book bag (Rijksmuseum, 16thC )

"In the Celtic calendar, winter and the new year began on November 1, and this was a time when the spirits of the dead were believed to make a brief return to the world. Later, this became the Christian All Saints' Day, while the following day became All Souls' Day when masses were said for souls in Purgatory. The pagan practice of leaving out food for the dead lingers on in the Cheshire children's custom of 'souling' or 'soul-caking' on November 1 and November 2. Groups of youngsters, often in fancy dressand with blackened faces, go from door to door, singing a jingle in return for small, spiced cakes or -more usually, nowadays- money. Souling used to be made more lively by the Hodening Horse -a man in a sheet, carrying a horse's head, who pranced about at the doors, snapping its jaws. The Wild Horse, possibly derived from the animal ridden by the Norse god, Odin, reappears in the Soul-Caking play performed by the Antrobus mummers at Antrobus, Comberbach, Acton Bridge and other local villages around Hallowe'en. The mummers include a character called the Letter-in, who starts the action by announcing: 'There is going to be a dreadful fight!' The Black Prince of Paradise in his spiked helmet is killed by King George and resurrected by the Quack Doctor. Other characters include Old Mary, Little Dairy Doubt and Beelzebub with his frying pan 'club'. But the most revered member of the group is the Wild Horse with his Driver, which appears in no other mummers' play in the country."
