My dad used to say, “Joey, when you get knocked down, get up.” I’ve leaned on those words my whole life, in politics and with my family, through the best days and the hardest ones. I write about that and more in my new book, PROMISE ME, AMERICA. It’s out November 17th, and you can preorder it now at PromiseMeAmerica.com. I’m looking forward to folks reading it.

Stumbled upon my old business card from my early days as a photocopier salesperson.
It brought back memories of being a young, hungry sales rep, learning the fundamentals of resilience, negotiation, and grit. Those lessons have stayed with me over the years and continue to shape how I approach business and engage with customers today.
It’s also a reminder that who you become tomorrow is often shaped by the foundation you lay today; the discipline, hard work, and consistency you put in when no one is watching.
Keep showing up. Keep learning. Keep executing.

The Final Hours of Obafemi Awolowo: His Daughter, Dr. Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosumu, Recounts the Story of His Death
Note:
Chief Obafemi Awolowo (1909–1987) was one of Nigeria’s foremost nationalist leaders, political thinkers and architects of the country’s independence era. A lawyer, journalist and statesman, he became the first Premier of Nigeria’s Western Region, serving from 1954 to 1959.
Awolowo founded the Action Group and emerged as one of the principal political figures of Nigeria’s First Republic. During the Nigerian Civil War, he served in the Federal Military Government as Federal Commissioner for Finance and Vice-Chairman of the Federal Executive Council.
He later contested Nigeria’s presidential elections in 1979 and 1983 under the Unity Party of Nigeria but was unsuccessful. Despite never becoming Nigeria’s president, Awolowo remains one of the most influential figures in Nigerian political history, remembered for his intellectual discipline, progressive social policies and enduring arguments for a strongly federal Nigeria.

4. Vaccination programs. Particularly HPV vaccination, which prevents cervical cancer, one of the most preventable cancers globally
5. Research investment . Continued funding into early detection technology and treatment innovation.
6. Community-level education. Especially in underserved regions, using trusted local voices to spread accurate information and counter misinformation, since "10-1">most cancer patients are now exposed to misinformation, which delays proper treatment-seeking.
Cancer's rise is real and measurable, but so is our ability to fight it. The data shows that prevention, early detection, and equal access to treatment could save millions of lives that would otherwise be lost. The fight against cancer isn't just a medical one .it is a matter of awareness, policy, and community action working together.

Cancer: A Growing Global Health Emergency
Background
Cancer is no longer a distant medical term. it is now one of the leading causes of death worldwide, touching nearly every family in some way.
"11-1">Nearly 21 million people were diagnosed with cancer and 9.8 million died from the disease globally in 2024. About 1 in 5 people worldwide will develop cancer during their lifetime. Also, 1 in 9 men and 1 in 13 women will die from it.
What makes this especially alarming is the pace of growth.
"15-1">Cancer incidence has risen 2.3-fold since 1990, and by 2050, cases are projected to exceed 26 million, with total people living with cancer surpassing 100 million.
"11-1">The ACS's own projection puts new cases at 34 million by 2050 — a 67% increase from 2024 driven simply by population aging and growth.
The Numbers Behind the Alarm
"9-1">In men, lung cancer leads with 1.6 million cases, followed by prostate cancer at 1.5 million. Among women, breast cancer tops the list with 2.4 million new cases, followed by lung cancer at 1 million . "9-1">Asia accounts for 53% of the global cancer burden due to its large population, compared to 21% in Europe and smaller shares elsewhere.
"15-1">High-income countries have higher incidence rates, but low-income countries carry the highest mortality burden meaning poorer nations are diagnosing fewer cases but losing more people, largely due to late detection and limited treatment access.
Major Causes
Cancer doesn't have one single cause. It develops when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably, usually triggered by a combination of factors:
1. Lifestyle factors. Tobacco use, excessive alcohol, poor diet, and physical inactivity
2. Obesity. Increasingly linked to rising cancer rates, "10-1">with obesity-related cancers rising among both younger and older adults worldwide.
3. Environmental exposure. Pollution, radiation, and certain chemicals.
4. Infections. some viruses (like HPV and Hepatitis B) are known to trigger specific cancers.
5. Genetics/family history. Some cancers run in families.
6. Aging population .As life expectancy rises globally, more people live long enough to develop cancer.
7. Alcohol use. "10-1">strengthening evidence now links alcohol consumption directly to increased cancer risk.
Why Cases Are Rising So Fast
Much of the increase is simply due to more people living longer combined with population growth but modifiable risk factors (diet, alcohol, tobacco, inactivity) are accelerating it further, especially in younger populations who are now being diagnosed earlier than previous generations.
Prevention
The encouraging part: cancer isn't entirely out of our hands. "11-1">Nearly half of all cancer deaths are estimated to be avoidable through modifiable risk factors, with an additional substantial share preventable through early detection and timely treatment.
Practical prevention steps:
- Avoid tobacco in all forms
- Limit alcohol consumption
- Maintain a healthy weight and stay physically active
- Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. limit processed meats
- Get vaccinated where available (HPV, Hepatitis B)
- Reduce exposure to environmental toxins and radiation
- Go for regular screenings. Many cancers are far more treatable when caught early
How It Can Be Eradicated: Awareness & Treatment
No single action eliminates cancer, but a combined approach significantly reduces its toll:
1. Public awareness campaigns. Teaching people to recognize warning signs and understand their own risk factors
2. Early screening programs. Mammograms, cervical screening, colorectal screening, and general checkups catch cancer while it's still treatable.
3. Equitable access to treatment Closing the gap between high-income and low-income countries, since mortality is disproportionately higher where treatment access is weakest.

In May 1990, during the burial rites of the great Hubert Ogunde, Dr I-Show Pepper (Ishola Ogunsola) led the dirge and procession while the prolific chanter Ogogo (Taiwo Hassan) carried the powerful oríkì and chants that day.
I-Show Pepper himself later joined the ancestors on 28 December 1992.
The same Ogogo who led those chants for Ogunde died yesterday (23 August 2026) and will be buried today, 24 August 2026, in his hometown Ilaro.
Who will now chant for him?
🚨 BREAKING: Ilaro Muslim Community Announces Burial of Veteran Actor Hassan Taiwo ‘Ogogo’
The Ilaro Muslim Community has announced the burial of its beloved son and veteran Yoruba actor, Alhaji Hassan Taiwo, popularly known as Ogogo.
According to the announcement by the Chief Imam of Ilaro, the burial prayer will be held at the Asade Agunloye Pavilion Ground at 10:00 a.m tomorrow.
Ogogo, who hailed from Ilaro, Ogun State, was a prominent figure in the Yoruba film industry. He was renowned as an actor, filmmaker and traditional chant performer, and remained one of the respected veterans of Nollywood. He was also known for his distinctive roles in Yoruba-language films and his contribution to the promotion of Yoruba culture.
His career was, however, marked by periods of serious health challenges. In 2025, Ogogo spoke publicly about battling chronic ulcer for several years.
More recently, his family disclosed that the 66-year-old actor had been battling stage-four cancer and appealed for urgent medical assistance. Reports said his condition had deteriorated, prompting colleagues, fans and well-wishers to organise prayers and seek specialist medical care for him.
The announcement of the burial has therefore come as a major shock to his fans, colleagues and the people of Ilaro, who continue to remember him for his remarkable career and cultural contributions.

Remember when the President said he had directed EFCC to (rightly, in my view) unfreeze the Osun account? Do you think that Ribadu would have resigned if it had happened when he was EFCC Chairman?
By the way, I disagree with the view of Learned Silk, Femi Falana, that the EFCC can freeze any government account, including that of the Federal Government.
Imagine EFCC freezing the Federal Government’s account. Their own salaries will not be paid and they will have to close shop.😁
That would be absurd. The Law does not support any interpretation that leads to absurdity.

These reports detail the historic conviction and sentencing of Nigeria’s former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, for his role in a massive money laundering scheme. The court found that Mamman conspired to divert N33.8 billion intended for vital hydroelectric power projects into personal luxury real estate and private accommodations. Following a period as a fugitive, he was apprehended by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to begin a landmark 75-year prison sentence. This penalty is notably severe because the judge ordered the sentences for all twelve counts to run consecutively rather than concurrently. bit.ly/3RRIiTr
