Late payments don't kill small businesses. The chasing does. Every café, startup and workshop has someone who hates sending the third reminder. That's the job we gave Ava. She follows up, logs it, and hands back to a human when it gets sensitive. What would you hand over first?

We build Ava, then use her ourselves. Our own software startup runs its back office through her: bills, receipts, reconciliation, chasing paperwork. If she cant keep us sorted, why would you trust her? Which back-office job would you hand over first?

New this week: Ava finds unpaid supplier bills in the inbox, checks they're not already in Xero, and creates a draft with the PDF attached. A person still looks it over. Same pain in a workshop, a restaurant or a startup. Which bill would you hand over first? #BuildInPublic

Lesson from building Ava, the back-office AI for small businesses and startups: the hard part isn't doing the admin, it's knowing when to stop and hand it back to a human. Chasing a payment is easy. Knowing when a customer needs a real person is the skill. What would you never automate?

Startups, restaurants, plumbers: the back office looks the same. Bills in the inbox, invoices to chase, receipts nobody filed, suppliers owing paperwork. Nobody starts a business to do it. That is the job Ava takes on. What admin would you hand over first?

AI TRADES MAN retweeted
When Emmett Bicker was 18, he moved to San Francisco to train language models at Magic. The work gradually pulled him toward a bigger question: could AI help do the research itself—not just answer questions researchers had already framed? He left to start Aster, a small SF team building an autonomous research system. The problem is partly speed, but also scope. A research team can spend hours or days exploring possible approaches, and fixed benchmarks capture only a narrow slice of scientific work. Aster’s system breaks a goal into research directions, sends AI agents to investigate them in parallel, and has planner agents coordinate the work. The agents can propose ideas, design experiments, run code, and return results; the company’s own writeups also describe manual intervention when experiments go off track. One striking example: Aster reports that about 1,000 concurrent model calls raised a ProteinGym score from 0.507 to 0.524 in 30 minutes. The winning change was not a new protein model, but a different way to score mutations using the model’s confidence. That’s a useful, concrete glimpse—not proof that open-ended science is solved. The harder question is whether systems like this can reliably find ideas worth testing beyond a scoreboard. If they can, researchers may spend less time waiting for searches to finish and more time deciding what the evidence actually means. asterlab.ai/

Ava started inside a plumbing business. Now plumbers, gasfitters, builders and cleaners are using her too. Turns out admin pain looks the same in every trade. Different van, same 9pm paperwork. Which trade do you reckon hates admin most?

GST return week. Every trade business owner knows the feeling: receipts in the ute, invoices half chased, spreadsheets open at 9pm. I'm building Ava Adminbot so the paperwork gets done before it gets to that point. What's your least favourite part of GST time?

Tender paperwork is a job on its own. Chasing quotes, filling forms, checking details, all before you've picked up a tool. Small trade businesses lose evenings to it. That's the kind of admin I'm building Ava to take off the pile. What admin eats your evenings?

Our team talks to Ava in Slack like a workmate. "Find that supplier invoice." Done. No digging through the inbox, no asking the office. Funny how small the wins feel until you stop doing them by hand. What's one thing you'd love to just ask for?

Building Ava Adminbot taught me something: the best ideas come from the tradies, not the dev team. Someone on the tools says "I keep losing that invoice" and a week later Ava finds it. What's one admin annoyance you'd fix if you could?

Built Ava for my plumbing business. Now plumbers, gasfitters, builders and cleaners are using her too. Lesson so far: trades don't want another app to learn. They want the admin to just get done. What's the one bit of admin you'd hand over tomorrow?

End of the month, the reconciliation pile. Matching bank lines to bills and invoices is the job every tradie owner puts off. Ava now builds reconciliation reports so the checking is mostly done before I sit down. What month-end admin do you dread most?

Chasing overdue invoices is the job nobody in a trade business wants. Awkward calls, forgotten emails, cash sitting out there. Ava follows them up for us, and a daily log shows the team exactly who got chased. Which admin job do you dread most?

Quotes sit in the ute for days because admin comes after the real work. I'm building Ava to help with the quoting grunt work so tradies can get prices out faster. What slows your quotes down most?

Behind the scenes on Ava Adminbot: every feature starts switched off. A new trade business signs up, then turns on only what they want. Invoice chasing first, receipts later. Trust gets built one switch at a time. #BuildInPublic

Most of my day on the tools is fine. It's the 9pm admin that wrecks me: invoices, GST, payroll, tenders. That's why I'm building Ava Adminbot: so the paperwork stops following tradies home. What's the admin job you'd hand off first?

Admin job nobody talks about: chasing suppliers for the missing paperwork. The statement that never arrived, the bill that's 'in the post'. Ava now does the nudging so the books aren't waiting on it. One less thing in my head at 9pm.

Plumber by day, bot builder by night. The goal for Ava: month-end reconciliation with no human babysitting it. We're not there yet, but every week there's one less admin job on my plate. Trades admin should run itself.

Tradies: what admin job do you put off the longest? For me it was chasing receipts and bills for the books. Building Ava Adminbot to take that off my plate. What would you hand over first?
