Highways were built through our communities, dividing neighborhoods, harming public health and our environment. It’s part of our lives, but it doesn’t have to be this way forever. In this new series, I’ll cover the history, impact, and what we can do across SD-15 and Texas.

0 traffic-related fatalities for 7 years 😳
Hoboken, NJ deserves some love. They eliminated roadway fatalities for 7 years by basically doing this at every intersection.

It's not just the highways and "Urban Renewal" projects decimating cities, but the large, consolidated blocks that sap the life out of neighborhoods.

#30DayMapChallenge Day 21 — Conflict Today’s highlight, inspired by the ongoing analysis of urban inequality in US cities by Adam Susaneck of @SegByDesign, was built by Mapboxer James Piacentini. This map shows the overlap of areas of “urban renewal” and public housing in New York City with historic redlining maps produced by the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC). The Mexican-American community of Palo Verde, before-and-after the government forcibly evicted residents and demolished the neighborhood in the 1950s. The site was then used to build Dodger Stadium—more precisely: the Dodger Stadium parking lot.

“It’s the largest competitive grant #Montgomery has ever received... The grant will enable Montgomery to make significant strides in rectifying past wrongs.” -@CityofMGM Mayor @stevenlouisreed on the $36m Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods Initiative (RCN) federal grant.
Two years after the Selma-to-Montgomery Voting Rights March in 1965, the neighborhoods in which the march had been organized were demolished for I-65 & 85. Now, the city has received a grant from Biden/Harris Admin. to begin reconnecting the communities divided by the highway.

Calida Rawles’ exhibit at @pamm is a painful, but important, highlighting of the ways in which urban highways led to the mass displacement and disenfranchisement of Miami’s Black communities. Very much in-line w/ @SegByDesign’s great work. We need to teardown, repair and restore

Here's my argument: if you want to understand how infrastructure does and doesn't get built in America today, there is no better single case study, than the Big Dig. The trailer is out now from @GBHNews; series launches Sept 27th. @PRX @ApplePodcasts podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas…
