This #EarthDay's theme is Plant v Plastics.
Take a read about Leicester's Dr Catherine Russell, who led a study that found plastic pollution is changing the way riverbeds behave.

Rivers have never been as diverse as they are today, with human activities influencing their morphologies and contents. @SeddyRocks discusses a crucial new sub-branch of sedimentology: plastic-sediment interactions:

It is an ✨honour✨ to have my #plasticpollution in #river beds research #featured in @geoscientistmag!
These magazines are how teenage me discovered that a #geoscience community existed, so seeing this is truly fantastic and surreal 🥹😊

OUT NOW! The winter 2023 issue of Geoscientist focusses on our community’s efforts to reverse the decline in geoscience student enrolment. We also highlight a new, but crucial, branch of sedimentology: plastic-sediment interactions:

Big news: USGS scientists & partners have confirmed, with 2 new lines of evidence, that human footprints found in White Sands Nat'l Park show that people lived in North America 21-23,000 yrs ago—much earlier than previously thought!

Libya has just experienced the deadliest flood of the 21st Century, with 7,000 confirmed dead.
In the city of Derna, home to 90,000 people, up to 20,000 are feared dead.
25% of the city is estimated to be destroyed after two dams collapsed due to extreme rainfall.

The presence of plastic particles in riverbed sediments can alter depositional processes and dune morphology and lead to more sand being locally mobilised to the water column.
