Kathryn, thanks for voicing this. As a former teacher, I too am concerned about this bill. None of us know how calm and precise we would be in a shooter situation. I think of so many scenarios where this could go terribly wrong. I trusted the SROs in my schools who were trained to carry guns and deal with active shooters. The problem with active shooter situations is that each one is different, and your situation would be different. How many kids are with you? Where are you in the school? Then there are the what ifs. What if, you are trying to take out a shooter but you are shaking and you miss possibly shooting an innocent in the process? Teachers have been tasking with taking on so many responsibilities. The stress is severe. They have become mental health counselors, first responders, and now security? I really feel sad for all the teachers who were never taught or told they would be expected to do these things as a part of their job. It would be wonderful if legislators would do something to curb violent behavior with violent weapons instead of just saying yet again, Let’s make the teachers handle it.
