Al-Khwarizmi: Stop Giving Islam Credit for Mathematics!
Whenever Muslims want to prove that Islam contributed to science and innovation, they proudly bring up Al-Khwarizmi, claiming he invented algorithms. But history tells a different story.
Algorithms existed long before Islam. Euclid used them more than a thousand years before Al-Khwarizmi was born!
Al-Khwarizmi studied and built upon earlier Greek and Indian mathematics. His own mathematical works were later translated into Latin and circulated in Europe. His Latinized name, Algoritmi, eventually gave us the word “algorithm.”
His name became associated with algorithms because his mathematical works were translated and popularized in Europe, NOT because he invented algorithms!
And where did his mathematics come from? The Quran? The Hadith? Neither!
Now here’s the uncomfortable question:
If Islam was the driving force behind scientific innovation, why aren’t Muslim-majority countries leading the world in scientific and technological breakthroughs today? Why are so many importing and consuming technologies developed elsewhere?
Don’t they have the same Quran? The same Hadith? The same religion?
Al-Khwarizmi deserves credit for his genuine contributions, particularly to algebra. But his achievements don’t prove that Islam itself was the source of his discoveries.
