Mediocrity asks for nothing, excellence demands everything. Excellence isn’t just hard work though; it’s discipline in disguise. The real challenge isn’t the grind-- it’s resisting the temptation of instant validation. In esports (and anywhere skill is king), the real edge comes from getting comfortable with discomfort, staying locked in even when no scoreboard confirms you’re on the right track.
Most players plateau because they need proof: rank-ups, highlight clips, social validation. When that proof doesn’t come fast enough, they either stop pushing or retreat into what feels safe. The best, however, find a new game inside the game. They turn progress into its own competition. Micro-adjustments in mechanics, cleaner movement, sharper decision-making-- each one is a mini-game, and winning them is how they keep score when the rankings don’t budge and external validation is nowhere to be found.
Perfection is the enemy of good, but greatness is built by chasing it anyway. Not because perfection is attainable, but because mastering the steps along the way is what truly matters. The players who win the mini-games stack advantages that compound over time. That’s where the gap forms. At first, it’s invisible. Then suddenly, it’s undeniable. By the time others realize what happened, it’s already too late for them to catch up.

🚨 Duncan Trussell on prayer: “It sounds nuts but what happens if you pray? Just for a few days, what happens? Once you start doing the experiment it starts off as ‘This is BS. An opiate of the masses.’ but then you realize you’re getting pulled in, not in a bad way, and there’s a sense of connection, something different from what you’re used to experiencing. And you might say “F**k this’ to that feeling and be skeptical but that’s okay. This is an invitation to connect on your own.”
