Traffic stays on the tunnel and the existing Bayway while they build the new cable-stay. Phase 1 reconstructs about one mile at the merge. The existing crossing has to carry I-10 for the whole five-year build.

Back in 2014 I became ‘immobile in Mobile’ on the bridge. I miraculously made it off the bridge and onto Water Street, after white knuckling almost the entire stretch of the bridge And the tunnel, then the off ramp! The differential blew up when I first got on the bridge, leaving me to drive the entire bridge, tunnel and off ramp because there was no emergency lane. This has been a LONG time coming. That drive is already a headache!
