Most intellectuals and most artists belong to the same type. Only the strongest of them force their way through the atmosphere of the bourgeois earth and attain to the cosmic. The others all resigned themselves or make compromises.

Remembering the great Chet Baker who was born this week in 1929. Noted for the plaintive, fragile tone of both his playing and singing, Baker was one of the most popular jazz musicians of his time.
He earned much attention and critical praise through the 1950s, particularly for albums featuring his vocals like âChet Baker Singsâ and âIt Could Happen to You.â
Bakerâs drug addiction almost destroyed his career and ultimately killed him. He was arrested several times for drug-related offences. He even pawned his music instruments and took a lot of beating by a mob, before deciding to take control of his life and returning to music around the 70s.
Here, he is performing âYou Donât Know What Love Isâ live in 1956.
