„In the biggest 5 countries in Europe, more than half of the population makes its income from the state, less than half from the private sector.“
Being too dependent on the state for jobs and welfare is detrimental to the core of the Liberalism - individual & collective Freedom.
The biggest, and stupidest, myth in European politics, particularly popular in France, is that Europe suffers the consequences of "austerity" and "neoliberalism". In the biggest 5 countries in Europe, more than half of the population makes its income from the state, less than half from the private sector. This is what makes the problem of reducing the welfare state so impossible: more than half of the voters are net recipients. No surprise that Italy's budget has not been balanced in 100 years, France's in 50 years (ooh la la, l'austérité!!):
-France: 30 million from the state versus 21m private sector workers. State spending is 57% of GDP, taxes more than half the economy. The budget hasn't been balanced in the lifetime of most French (since 1974).
- Germany: 35 million adults from the state, versus 34 million from the private sector. 10% of the population is registered as severely disabled. Public spending is over half of GDP. Germany has had a continuous budget deficit since 2019.
-Italy: 23 million from the state, versus 20.5 million private-sector workers. Public spending is 51% of GDP. Italy has had a budget deficit every year since 1925, for 100 years.
- Spain more people get their income from the state since 2024: 18.21 million from the public sector versus 17.9 million people working in the private sector. Since 2025, Spain also had more government employees than self-employed workers (autónomos) for the first time in history. State spending is at 45%, budget has not been balanced since 2007.
- UK: 54% of households now receive more in state benefits than they pay in taxes. State spending is 44.5% of GDP, taxes (40%) are at their highest since 1950, the budget hasn't been balanced since 2001, and 1 in 5 new cars is paid by the government through a bizarre state disability scheme (Motability).
It’s stunning to relive the same mania 25 years later👇👇
Why is the overall market so fixated on $CRWV's imminent demise?
At the peak of the Dot Com bubble, $CSCO - the largest company in the world, and the $NVDA equivalent of the era - generated about 10% of its revenue from circular deals through vendor-financed startups.
When those startups lost access to capital, $CSCO's revenue growth went from +66% to -30% within a few quarters, and the stock lost 80% of its value. The same story played out across the dot com supply chain, sending the Nasdaq down 80%.
Today, $CRWV alone makes up roughly 8% of
$NVDA GPU sales. Losing that demand is enough to nuke $NVDA's growth story all by itself.
Oh, and $CRWV isn't an isolated example - every major neocloud is hemmoraghing cash and borrowing costs are going UP across the board.
If you lose the neoclouds, you lose the incremental growth driver for marginal data center capacity, and the AI capex trade goes up in smoke.
That's why we're seeing carnage across the entire AI supply chain, from $CAT and $GEV to $MU, $AVGO and more recently $NVDA.
This is what the beginning of the end of a debt-fueled, circular-financed capex bubble looks like.

This is the exact type of product made by a designer, with minimal user feedback.
The HomeView has a 7-inch Liquid Retina display. The standard iPad has a 11-inch Liquid Retina display. But the HomeView has an ugly base and limited functionality. Every family in America will prefer the iPad.
These small smart home products don't work. Siri doesn't work. At $299, the HomeView will be viewed as a downgrade from the other core Apple products. It is an expensive home accessory. Most families will buy a stand for their iPad, which has more flexibility.
I have a Google Nest Hub. It has more functionality but the fixed base is a problem. I don't want to use it as an alarm clock, or to watch YouTube videos. Gemini Live is better than Siri, and I prefer to use Gemini on my phone.
I don't think HomeView will move the needle for Apple, and will fall below expectations.

Replying to @GabLattanzio

The US AI bubble is resting on 3 key assumptions: 1- shortage of compute 2- no roadblocks to the infra rollout and 3- there will be ample financing to support the outlandish capex spend assumptions.
Let’s take these one by one and put it past the Casio stress test.

Readers added context they thought people might want to know

All that the crazy debate about France not paying its debts ("cancelling" the debt) has achieved is to reduce both France's credibility and the ECB's room for manoeuvre. TPI only counters "unwarranted, disorderly" market dynamics. Higher yields on countries which may not want to pay their debts are not unwarranted.
Good move.

It's really crazy how strongly wealth inverse correlates with regulatory burden
If you make it easy for people to start and run businesses and don't get in their way too much, everyone gets wealthier
If you make it hard for people to start and run businesses and get in their way constantly, everyone gets poorer
You can see the effect clearly within the EU:
Countries with low regulatory burden like Switzerland and Ireland have much higher incomes than places like Spain or Hungary where its regulatory burden is high
