Walter owns an asset management firm and insurance companies. He uses premiums at his insurance companies to make loans to companies he owns. This is usually OK, but you can't do it too often, and you have to disclose it. Walter did it a lot and didn't disclose it. Now he is trying to unwind deals to pay back the loans because the DOJ is investigating him. The Lakers deal gets him a good chunk of the money, but he likely needs another few billion by year-end. He can either raise money privately ā Bloomberg says he is trying to do that by offering double-digit yields and using his personal stake in his asset management firm as collateral ā or sell off assets to make up the difference. It's tough to tell what will happen, but I think every option is on the table, including selling the Dodgers, Chelsea, Sparks, PWHL, and his motorsports investments across NASCAR, IndyCar, and F1.
Mark Walter has seriously screwed the franchises in his sports ownership portfolio.
First heās forced to sell the Lakers to pay off the billions of dollars his insurance companies loaned to the same businesses he owns. This causes a disruption in the Buss family which may likely delay the sale and will lead to significant internal turmoil.
Then, with the Dodgers he causes serious controversy within the MLB through his salary cap methods. Signing over a billion dollars on player payroll but deferring it, essentially making it a future owners problem. As of result, dozens of teams within the MLB are disgruntled and, the league is projected for a lockout to start next season.
I wonder if the next domino to fall will be Chelsea FC.
How do the Dodgers carry an unlimited payroll?
Filings uncovered by @NickNemo17 show roughly $1.45 billion in debt for American Media Productions, the entity behind SportsNet LA and the Dodgers' 25-year, $8.35 billion Charter deal, sitting on the balance sheets of 5 life insurance companies tied to or controlled by the Dodgers' own ownership group.
i.e. the Dodgers get a sweetheart deal on their TV rights from a media company their owners co-own, financed by insurance companies those same owners control.
Because ownership sits on both sides, as borrower and lender, the setup functions as a closed loop:
-When RSNs hit turbulence, banks enforce covenants or force restructuring. Here the lenders are insurers the owners manage, so the capital stays patient and cash flow to the team never gets choked.
-MLB taxes net local revenue at 34% but allows deductions for debt service and interest tied to running the network. Carrying $1.45 billion in media debt on AMP's balance sheet generates interest expense that shrinks reportable net TV income and the resulting revenue-sharing bill.
Then there's the payroll itself. Over $1 billion of it is deferred, owed to 9 players through 2047. Pushing that cash out frees up money today, some of which is going toward servicing that same debt, and kicks the actual bill to a stretch of decades many of today's owners won't be around for.
LA built a (seemingly illegal) structure that captures its own interest yield, shelters TV income from league revenue sharing, and helps fund payroll dominance in the process.
Yeah I donāt think Miami wouldāve been willing to match that, on the minimum wouldāve been great.
Need Klay to get bought out soon
Free agent Bradley Beal has agreed to a two-year, $13.2 million deal to return to the Los Angeles Clippers, with a player option in the second season, Mark Bartelstein of @PrioritySports tells ESPN.

I remember asking assistant coach Mo Cheeks, whatās harder to do? Workout after practice or before?? I only asked cuz by time I would get to the gym, Russ was already done in the morning and I usually got mine in after practice. Mo like, ācoming in before practice is probably harderāā¦since then, itās been my routineā¦.a lot of people looked at the emotions on the court and thought Russ was loud, nah to me, he was quiet and methodical. He lead by example and once the lights were bright, he let everything out and experienced pure freedom. It was inspiring as his teammate and everywhere I went, I seen it inspire people from all walks of life, crazy thing is, he didnāt say much, he just showed up. For 18 years. This basketball life is sacred to us as professionals, what we put into that court means everything. Some of us wish we could go back and do things with a little more intent and some can just wipe their hands and be satisfied with the time spent. Who u gonna be? We know what zero was onā¦keep inspiring in the next phase of life champ. I donāt care what happens, canāt erase what it wasā¦The first YNs, finals run in our early 20s, all star games, seeing each other get injured and bounce back, the bus rides, plane rides, card games, jokes and arguments, the whole thing, memorable!! ā¦to the whole Westbrook family, Nina, the kids, mama Westbrook, big Russ, Ray, Donnell, everybody from luezinger high and ucla and many more that Iām forgettin, much love and Congratulations on a iconic career.

Broward County has submitted plans that could transform the 154-acre area surrounding the Florida Panthersā home into a massive 24/7 mixed-use destination.
The proposal could include:
š 1,400 apartments
šØ 600 hotel rooms
š¢ 1.62M sq. ft. of office/education space
šļø 300K sq. ft. of commercial space
š³ New green & public spaces
š Transit hub with express service to Miami
My biggest positives and negatives if this plan eventually goes through are:
Positives:
1. Completely changes the Panthers game-day experience
Right now, Amerant Bank Arena is primarily a destination: drive in, park, watch the game, leave. Restaurants, bars, hotels, apartments and public spaces immediately surrounding the arena could make Panthers games feel much more like an entertainment district. Fans could arrive hours earlier and stay afterward instead of immediately getting back on the Sawgrass Expressway.
2. Much better use of enormous parking lots.
This is probably the strongest argument for the project. The arena sits on an unusually large amount of surface parking. Replacing portions of it with revenue-producing residential, hotel, office and commercial buildings gives Broward County and potentially the Panthers dramatically more economic value from the same property. The Panthers' development rights were a significant component of the 2024 arena agreement.
3. Transit is a major opportunity.
The arena is presently extremely car-dependent. The concept's transit component could reduce that somewhat over time. The arena's location is accessible to several major highways, including I-595, I-75 and the Sawgrass Expressway, but highway accessibility isn't the same thing as having good non-car access.
Negatives:
1. Traffic is easily the biggest concern.
This is the issue I'd watch more than anything else. Adding roughly 1,400 residences, hotels, offices, restaurants and commercial activity around a 20,000-seat arena means considerably more everyday trafficāand then you layer Panthers games or sold-out concerts on top of it.
The irony is that the district becomes more successful as a destination, but that also means more people trying to reach the same relatively concentrated area.
2. Losing surface parking has to be handled extremely well.
Those huge parking lots aren't attractive, but they're extremely functional on game nights. If thousands of spaces disappear, structured garages have to replace them efficiently. Poor garage entrances/exits could make postgame traffic worse than it is today.
3. The office component is probably the piece I'd question most.
Residential, restaurants, hotels and entertainment around an NHL arena are easy to understand. A huge amount of office/educational space is harder to predict. The success of that portion would depend heavily on what tenants Broward/Panthers developers could attract.
4. Construction could be painful for Panthers fans for years.
If this gets built in phases across existing parking areas, there could be seasons involving temporary parking configurations, closed entrances, construction traffic and longer walks.
5. The district has to work on non-game days.
This is crucial. A great arena district can't be packed 50ā100 nights per year and empty the rest of the time. The residential, hotel, restaurant and entertainment mix has to generate enough everyday activity to support businesses year-round.
