A lovely little find I picked up from my friend Oliver at Collinge & Clark Books in London. Before he became one of England's greatest printers and type designers, John Baskerville (1706-1775) earned his living in Birmingham as a writing master and letter cutter.
This inscription, known as Baskerville's Slab, originally hung in the window of his workshop, advertising: "Grave Stones Cut in any of the Hands By John Baskervill Writing Master." It is one of the earliest surviving examples of his work and foreshadows the precision and elegance that would later define his famous typeface.
I, a quiet, chubby, balding, middle-aged man, just told the man behind the counter at Spud-U-Like in Brighton, while pointing at a jacket potato, that I was “ravishing” rather than “ravenous”. And now I must leave the country.
I can’t go viral with calligraphy these days. I might buy myself an unhinged looking puppy, and start filming myself chasing it around the house.
I was feeling a bit down, but I've been getting financial advice from a charismatic 14 year old on TikTok, and now I'm feeling much more positive about 2026.
