You probably don’t know me, but I’m a developer. As a #drc20 enthusiast, I've been diving into what could go wrong with integrating #doginals for CEX. Here's what I've discovered and where we currently stand on this issue. First Dogelabs open-source indexer (one year ago) Dogelabs was the first to introduce a public indexer. To run it, three components are needed: - A Dogecoin node - The ord: a forked version of the BRC-20 ord protocol, created by apezord and adapted by Dogelabs (available at github.com/verydogelabs/wonk…) - The Dogelabs indexer: another fork that parses inscription data and builds balances (available at github.com/verydogelabs/drc2…) I never managed to get @verydogelabs original indexer running efficiently, mainly due to high memory consumption and a lack of optimization on Redis indexes. It required considerable adjustments, and it seems like @doggy_market successfully customized it for their marketplace needs. For a year, all builders using @verydogelabs indexer faced the same issue: reorgs. What is a reorg? A "reorg" (reorganization) on the Dogecoin blockchain occurs when a new version of the chain becomes longer than the current one. In this case, recent blocks are temporarily replaced by a new chain, which can modify some transactions. This usually happens when two miners find a block at the same time, and the chain with the most computing power becomes the official one. How does a reorg impact things? During a reorg, all balances need to be recalculated. One way to avoid being affected is to stay 12 blocks behind the latest block (as 99% of reorgs occur within the last 12 blocks). However, a large reorg can be highly disruptive: - The ord stops and must resync (which can take days) - The indexer, based on ord, also needs to resync and recalculate all balances (again, taking days) - This is why, in the past, Dogelabs has occasionally paused the marketplace to let everything resync. Handling reorgs programmatically to roll back balances is challenging and requires being integrated from the start. For a year, this was the public solution. What about the $hub indexer? The @DoginalsHub indexer was developed from scratch and runs directly with a Dogecoin node, avoiding the need for the ord. Advantages: - Better performance - Ability to handle reorgs - Opens doors to many enhancements Disadvantages: - Requires re-coding many concepts introduced by ord However, the $hub indexer doesn’t follow a key ordinal rule: tracking sats as specified here : docs.ordinals.com/faq.html#h… While simple in theory, it’s complex in practice due to massive data volumes. Tracking sats is essential since it validates inscriptions beyond the JSON format, linking them to UTXO. Without this, balances may differ from other indexers that follow the full rules. How did GateIO and Ascendex integrated DOGI? A CEX has two options to integrate a DRC-20 token: - Use a trusted third party - Run its own indexer to manage balances GateIO likely uses APIs from Dogelabs or Doggymarket or managed to run the indexer by adapting it as Doggymarket did. Where are we now? Things are evolving. Dogelabs’ approach has shifted, and now their “indexer” repo is no longer required. They’ve integrated a new indexer directly within ord (see github.com/verydogelabs/wonk…). I’ve seen commits on the main branch showing collaboration from all major DRC-20 actors to improve the public indexer—a big step forward. Advantages of this new approach: - The indexer can handle reorgs using savepoints (auto-rollbacks to a specific pre-reorg point) - Balance-checking APIs are now directly integrated into ord In short, everything is now streamlined to make it easier to run an indexer. Facilitating CEX integration This new indexer makes it significantly easier for CEXs to integrate DRC-20. A recent pull request added holders' data and fixed issues (github.com/verydogelabs/wonk…). It’s clear that this indexer is being integrated by a CEX, as shown by the recent iterations in commits. But which one(s)? That’s the surprise! Keep in mind that Dogelabs, Doggymarket, and $hub (possibly Ordifind too, though unconfirmed) are currently working together on a unified indexer and for me it is extremely bullish ! I'd like to thank them all, because it's not an easy road, and they're coming up with something concrete that will propel the #DRC20 to the moon.
