This French Sécurité Civile seaplane is doing exactly what Canada’s firefighters are using right now to battle wildfires — flying low over the water, scooping up thousands of liters in seconds, and turning around to drop it on the fires.
With more than 850 fires currently burning across Canada, these water bombers are actively being deployed, especially when they can refill straight from a river instead of flying back to base.
At the same time, the smoke has been drifting south into the U.S., and cities like Detroit, Minneapolis, and Chicago have been dealing with some of the worst air quality in the world this week. A lot of Americans are frustrated, feeling like the fires aren’t being fought aggressively enough.
It’s striking to watch one of these planes doing its job up close, knowing the same type of aircraft are flying missions right now while their smoke travels hundreds of miles into American cities.
Should Canada be fighting every wildfire more aggressively to protect American air quality?
