If this were a police department, I think people would be talking about a consent decree. How can you let 1200 students be assaulted with this little to show for it? I sincerely hope other universities don't have similar numbers.
NEW: I analyzed seven years of Cornell's sexual violence case data. Expulsions are very rare.
1,216 reports of sexual assault, DV and stalking from 2018-2024.
162 formal investigations.
51 findings of fault.
14 suspensions.
7 expulsions or dismissals. usatoday.com/story/news/nati…
What do you even do to address this at an institutional level? Feels like partly a cultural issue where some students feel immune to consequence, and others feel discouraged by a deafening lack of response or outlet.
Eager to hear what students in my classes have to say

Good read, especially to share with undergrads if you have a class on policing

Bro, just use the passkey. It’s in the magic link. It’s in your authenticator app. We sent you a code. It’s 2FA with your phone and yubikey. It’s face id. It’s sign in with SSO. Just enable touch id. Do you want to stay signed in? (we’ll log you out anyways)

A reminder that in the 2009 movie “Knowing”, Nicholas Cage flashes an MIT badge that simply reads “Academic.”

Most innovative police technologies are often aggressively marketed with the promise of increased efficiency & effectiveness without the necessary evaluation research and findings to back up their claims. Case & point here. I trust @ian_t_adams and co. over @axon_enterprise anyday.
I had a journalist reach out who had asked @axon_enterprise about my study of their "DraftOne" AI police report writing product. Axon reportedly told the journalist that the study wasn't even peer reviewed.
At the risk of being right, here's the link to the study, which was definitely peer reviewed, and even pre-registered, and that pre-registration *was shared with Axon* before results were known.
Any ideas why @axon_enterprise would think this wasn't a pre-registered, peer reviewed experiment showing null effects for the claim that DraftOne doesn't save any time for officers drafting reports? I'm at a loss.

NEW: UC San Diego has released a new report documenting a “steep decline in the academic preparedness” of its freshmen.
The number of entering students needing remedial math has exploded from 1/100 to 1/8.
They’ve had to create a second remedial class covering elementary and middle school math skills in addition to the one covering gaps from high school.

Considering the issue with flights and airports, can I ask how people are getting to DC and if you've changed your travel plans?

I'll have to remember this analogy for whenever I teach a professional development class!
Happy to report that no one from my class took the opportunity of our surprise fire drill to leave in the middle of a lecture
I have two back-to-back sections of Intro to Policing this semester and while the second section gets a more refined lecture where I've already found my words, the first section doesn't have to deal with my voice dying in the middle of class
