๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ๐ฌ๐ง Britain sent warships into a friendly country's harbours. ๐ฅ
And burned its ships at anchor. โ
That country was Brazil ๐ง๐ท
More enslaved Africans were taken to Brazil than to any other country on earth. โ๏ธ
Not America ๐บ๐ธ Brazil ๐ง๐ท
Nearly half of everyone shipped across the Atlantic went there. Ten times more than the United States. ๐
In 1826 Britain made Brazil sign a treaty. The trade would end by 1830. ๐
Brazil signed. Then ignored it. They even had a phrase for laws like that: "para inglรชs ver". For the English to see. ๐
Tens of thousands of people kept arriving every year. ๐
So Britain changed the law. Brazilian slave ships could now be tried in British courts as pirates. โ๏ธ
In 1850 the Royal Navy sailed into Brazil's ports, under the guns of the forts. They cut out the slave ships and burned them. ๐ข
Emperor Pedro II's government had a choice. War with Britain. Or end the trade. โ๏ธ
That September, Brazil banned it. Within two years the trade was dead. ๐๏ธ
Yet today only one country is asked to feel ashamed. ๐ค

There were five slave trades. You were taught about only one. ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ๐ฌ๐ง
One. The Atlantic. Twelve million Africans shipped to the Americas. Britain banned it in 1807, then hunted it for sixty years.
Two. The Barbary trade. A million Europeans taken to North Africa. Britain bombarded Algiers in 1816.
Three. The Saharan trade. A thousand years of caravans north across the desert. Britain had its northern end banned. Tripoli, 1857.
Four. The East African trade. Twenty thousand people a year through one customs house. Britain forced the market shut. 5 June 1873.
Five. The Ottoman trade. Raiders sold Eastern Europeans south for three hundred years. Britain made the Sultan ban it in 1854.
It cost sixty years and two thousand sailors. Nobody else fought all five. ๐๐ฌ๐ง
It isn't over. Mauritania only made it a crime in 2007. Fifty million people are in slavery today.
Someone has to remember who started the fight. โ๐ฌ๐ง๐ช

When Abraham Lincoln was shot, London didnโt find out for twelve days. โณ
An American called Cyrus Field dreamed of a wire under the ocean.
โจBut nobody in America could make it. Only Britain could. ๐ฌ๐ง๐ญ
Two warships tried to lay it. HMS Agamemnon and USS Niagara. ๐ข
โจIt snapped. It broke. Again and again. ๐
In August 1858 it finally held. America went wild. ๐
โจThree weeks later the cable was dead.
For seven years the ocean stayed silent.โจThen Britain took it on. ๐ฌ๐ง
A new cable from Greenwich.
โจThe only ship on earth big enough to carry it: Brunelโs giant, the Great Eastern. โ
In 1865, twelve hundred miles out, the cable snapped.
โจIt sank more than two miles down. ๐
Most people would have given upโฆ
โจThey made another cable instead. ๐ช
July 1866. Heartโs Content, Newfoundland.
โจBritain and America were joined. News that took twelve days now took minutes. โก
But the job wasnโt finished.
โจThey went back for the cable theyโd lost. Two and a half miles down. Nearly thirty attempts. ๐ช
Then the spot of light moved.
โจThe cable was alive. โจ
The wharf is still there in Greenwich. The house on it is a pub now.
โจYou can drink a pint where the world was wired. ๐บ
We come from people who go back for it. ๐ฌ๐ง

They taught you to be ashamed of this country. โ๏ธ
Here's what they left out.
The steam engine. The telephone. The television. The world wide web. The computer you're reading this on. All of it Britain.
Vaccination, given to the world for free. Over an estimated 200 million lives saved. ๐ฌ๐ง
Britain abolished the slave trad4e. Then spent sixty years on the open ocean making sure the rest of the world agreed.
Over 800,000 people freed at once. Countless more saved from a life of slavery.
The NHS. Free at the point of need.
This is not a perfect country. No country is.
But this is a country that looked at what was wrong with the world and tried to fix it. Repeatedly. For centuries.
Britain's greatness didn't happen by accident. It happened because ordinary people worked together. That's what we're doing again. First it starts with us working together once more.

A new study suggests that non-biological sources cannot fully account for the abundance of organic compounds found in a sample collected by the rover.

The monologue from todayโs The Times at One with Andrew Neil @TimesRadio
The Palace of Westminster is not as big as you might think. Too small, for example, for it to have its own dedicated village idiot. So they take it in turns.ย
Yesterday it was the turn of David Lammy and the Tory shadow defence spokesman who goes by the name of James Cartlidge. Nope. Iโd never heard of him either.ย
For DPM and Justice Secretary Lammy this was a welcome return to a role at which he excels.ย
Who can forget his Oscar winning performance on Celebrity Mastermind which, among many comedy gold highlights, peaked when he was asked โwho succeeded Henry the Eighthโ and answered โHenry the Seventhโ. Back of the net.ย
And Lammy didnโt let us down yesterday. He began by intoning gravely that, as Remembrance Sunday approached, he, for one, would never forget the ultimate sacrifice made by those in war to keep as safe and free.ย
But he, for one, was alone in the Commons chamber, in forgetting to wear a poppy. One had to be smuggled down to him from a Labour backbencher. As chance would have it, from a military veteran.ย
This was vintage Lammy. But we expect no less of a man who once complained he never saw any police in his area when one was standing just a few yards away from him.ย
Cartlidge, the Tory defence spokesman โย pay attention now โ kept asking an increasingly rattled Justice Secretary if any other asylum seekers had recently been wrongly released from jail. Lammy refused to answer. Cartlidge asked again and again. Again and again Lammy refused to answer.ย
Inexplicably. Since, unlike Mastermind, this time Lammy actually knew the correct answer. Another migrant had indeed been wrongly released. Cartlidge knew that too.ย
He rose to deliver the coup de grace with his final question. Only to be shut down by the Speaker because heโd used up his allotted six questions.ย
Faced with such an easy target as Lammy only the Tories could send into bat someone who canโt count to six.ย
The predilection of the prison service for freeing prisoners who shouldnโt be freed adds to the peopleโs perception that huge chunks of the public sector are now run by unaccountable numpties whose political masters are even more useless than they are.ย
Itโs hard to avoid the impression you could land a jumbo jet in Wandsworth prison and clean it out by lunchtime before anybody would notice.ย
Of course, as with most things these days, itโs all the Prime Ministerโs fault. Lammy wouldnโt have been at the dispatch box yesterday if Keir Starmer hadnโt decided to leg it to Brazil for yet another green grifters convention known as COP. Conference of the Parties. More accurately described these days as an Excuse for a Party. This one is COP30
Not long ago Starmer had no plans to attend. After all, the heads of the four biggest CO2 emitters โ China, America, India and Russia โ arenโt going so whatโs the point of a minor player like Starmer turning up?ย
Especially since the central purpose of this COP is for the Brazilian President to extort tens of billions of dollars from rich countries to finance a new tropical forest fund. Starmer, under pressure from the Treasury, has already made it clear heโs not interested in ponying up a contribution. And quite right too.ย
Brazilโs president has shown his commitment to the rain forest by driving a massive highway through it so delegates can get to the COP convention site. And parked two dirty diesel powered cruise ships off the coast to house those delegates for whom there are no hotel rooms. Brazilโs airports are also struggling to cope with the influx of private and official jets.ย
Like Britainโs prisons the whole COP process isnโt fit for purpose. The Paris COP in 2015 decreed CO2 emissions should peak by 2020 and decline markedly by 2030. Last year CO2 emissions reached a new record level. There is no decline.ย
COP has been reduced to a jamboree for climate change virtue signallers. Itโs time to try something new.

I see Nicola Sturgeon is once again complaining that I posted a picture of myself wearing a T-shirt with her name on it and the legend 'Destroyer of Women's Rights.' Apparently this didn't 'elevate the debate.'
Is there a clinical term for an individual who has extreme thinness of skin when it comes to their own perceived hurts, coupled with a rhino-hide when it comes to the fear and suffering of others?
I'm thinking in particular of the two women Isla Bryson raped, who had to watch their First Minister squirm and smirk on TV as she tried to avoid admitting he was a man; of the five survivors of male violence who were ready to give evidence to Sturgeon's committee on gender self-ID, but were told to put their concerns in writing while seventeen trans-identified people appeared in person; of the mother of a young girl with a learning disability who campaigned against self-ID because she wanted her daughter to be guaranteed same sex intimate care, should she need it (the mother was presumably one of those female opponents Sturgeon calls 'shrill' and 'hysterical' in her memoir); of the ten-year-old girl sexually assaulted in a public bathroom by a 6'5" paedophile who served his jail sentence in a women's prison because he called himself 'Katie'; of Sandie Peggie, forced to discuss her own menstrual history in public to justify not wanting to undress in view of a 6ft straight cross-dresser in the nurses' changing room; of Marion Millar, dragged into court because she tweeted a picture of suffragette ribbons; of the Scottish rape crisis centres reliant on government funding who were pressured to admit trans-identified males into their services if they wanted funding to continue.
When Sturgeon refers to an 'elevated debate', she means a discussion that takes place within a tiny, smug bubble from which regular women suffering real life consequences of her policies are firmly excluded. These faceless ants are loftily dismissed as bigots, or, to be more precise: 'transphobic, misogynistic, homophobic, maybe racist as well.'
Nicola, you hated the T-shirt picture because you couldn't ignore it, as you'd ignored so many other women trying to make you understand their concerns. Appeals to your empathy, your intelligence and your compassion all failed. Apparently the only way to get through to you is through your vanity.
