On this day 21 years ago, John Cena debuted the Monday Night Raw version of the spinner WWE Championship belt.

This was not a completely new belt, however. It featured the main plate and outer side plates of the original spinner belt, but the inner side plates and leather strap were replaced.

The original strap had a dark blue leather backing and featured a 2x8 snap set on both sides; and this new version had a black suede backing and a 2x5 snap set on the “female”/right side.

Happy birthday to Scott Steiner, who turns 64 today. Instead of that Steiner math promo, here is another example of why he's just bloody great.

It was probably just an mistaken detail on the maker’s part since the red Universal Championship belts featured a black swoosh. The black swoosh on the WWE Championship belt was repainted red and reappeared on tv a month later.

AJ Styles says he has no idea why he once had a WWE Championship with a black swoosh: “I don't know. We have championships that we carry with us, and then we have championships that we keep with WWE. They have these boxes that once you're done, you put it in a case and that's their stuff. For some reason, I don't remember why, I pulled that out, didn't think anything. I just slap it on, boom, I have the black stripe in there. I had no idea, but for WWE fans that are fans of their titles, they're like, ‘Whoa, what is this?!’ It was a big deal. Truth is, I had no idea. I didn't know the difference.” (@ChrisVanVliet)

a* mistaken detail. I had written “an overlooked detail” first and decided to change it lol

The plate spacing and the tooling style on the leather behind the main plate were changed to match the red Universal Championship belt, which Wildcat had been making for over a year prior to the black swoosh WWE Championship belt

The red Universal Championship belts also featured a black swoosh, and belts are sometimes made in batches with other copies, which may explain the swoosh on the WWE Championship belt being the wrong color
