My heart goes out to the family, loved ones and the entire Nuxalk Nation community affected by this terrible tragedy. The news from Bella Coola is heartbreaking, and at a time of such profound grief and uncertainty, my thoughts are with everyone who is hurting and with all those supporting one another through an incredibly difficult day.
There are no words that can ease the pain of a tragedy like this. I hope the family and the community feel the care, compassion, and support of people across British Columbia as they grieve.

Zero doubt that @DPinBC is one of the smartest, most capable, and experienced people in Canadian politics.
He’s also a truly principled conservative, having started as one of only two Reform Party staffers back in the earlly 90s, when I first got to know him.
Plus he’s a fantastic guy, in politics for all the right reasons.
Brilliant choice by @LDoerkson.

If you need surgery, what matters most?
That the surgery is done correctly and without a long wait time or that the surgery takes place in a government facility?
For most Canadians their top concern is getting the treatment done right, not where it takes place.
A Leger poll for SecondStreet.org found 59% of Canadians support governments paying non-government clinics to treat patients in the public system and bring wait times down. Only 23% oppose it.
Patients would still use their health card. Many provinces already worked this way to clear surgical backlogs after COVID.
Most of Europe pays a mix of government and non-government providers to treat public patients, and coverage stays universal for everyone.

Congratulations to Jennifer Whiteside on being named Interim Leader of the BC NDP.
I sat across the floor from her for a long time and she is a serious person who works hard for the people she represents.
A good opposition makes for a better government, and I expect her to hold us to account while we get to work delivering what we promised British Columbians.

Gosh! What chaos!
NEW — I've been informed by a reliable source within the BC NDP that there is "massive internal outrage" over caucus' decision to publicly recommend Jennifer Whiteside as interim leader before the provincial council approved.
The body with the sole constitutional authority to select an interim leader is set to meet at 6pm.
