Garbage piles up in Yemen's Taiz after Houthis encircle city - News

The EU is following with alarm the situation in Taiz. The EU calls on Houthi forces to lift their siege of the city and allow the entry of food, water, medicines and fuel. Civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected and partners allowed to deliver essential aid.

Taiz needs action now. Protect civilians. Keep essential supplies moving. Ensure people can access healthcare, water and humanitarian assistance.
Taiz cannot be forgotten.

The rapid Houthi gains along the Red Sea should be a wake-up call: there is still no credible military solution to Houthi threats. But the region & US also cannot afford to ignore those threats. April Alley and I offer an alternative approach in our new piece in Foreign Affairs
If the anti-Houthi coalition fails to address its internal divisions and establish a “credible political vision for resolving the Yemeni conflict,” the Houthi threat will continue to expand across the region, warn April Longley Alley and @AllisonMinor_.

Today marks one year of US murder of civilians at sea.
The stakes are extraordinarily high: the Trump admin is asserting it can kill anyone accused of a crime, anywhere, no due process.
@CivCenter calls for accountability and an immediate end to these extrajudicial killings.
I'm looking forward to reading @AkbarSAhmed's upcoming book digging deeper into the contemporaneous rationalizations a lot more than this predictable and half-hearted set of mea culpas
Replying to @ScottTPaul
Biden formers can revise their obviously wrong, self-serving strategic outlook anytime.
But the “regrets” here are for analytical errors, not the higher order decision to treat the law as some obscure procedural nuisance.

The Biden admin lied about IL blocking aid & indiscriminate attacks in order to evade legal restrictions on arms sales “bc they were so close to a deal and making progress.”
The lies were as deadly as the bombs, undercutting humanitarian diplomacy and pressure for ceasefire

Jake Sullivan regrets not doing more to restrain Israel. Biden fell into "the trap" of deferring arms halt thinking deal was imminent. "I will say straightforwardly—we should have put more pressure on Israel to take a different approach," he tells @ddk_nyc newyorker.com/magazine/2026/…

An Oxfam colleague in Gaza told us: "Even after the ceasefire, life remains harsh and dangerous... I still hear massive bombings and witness people being killed. This is our daily reality in Gaza, a life of constant fear and survival."
These ceasefires are failing. 2/2

When ceasefires are signed, the firing is expected to cease. But President Trump seems to think that communities in "that part of the world" should accept the death and suffering from "modest shooting" 1/2
Thank you to Members of Congress who claimed their Congressional authority and voted to remove U.S. forces from hostilities against Iran.

This war has already had devastating humanitarian impacts in the region and was launched without any real pretext of self-defense - a blatant violation of international law.

I’m not into black listing anyone from future work in their area of expertise but I do think it’s fair to want a whole new crop of foreign policy staffers in the next democratic administration. It’s not like the same 120 people are the only people who know anything.
“This is not a defense budget. It is a war budget, designed to enable a pattern of aggressive military action… Under these circumstances, increased military spending is no longer a matter of technical budgetary judgment; it is a driver of human suffering.”
Until now, @OxfamAmerica has never taken a position on the Pentagon budget. I'm writing in @TheHill @TheHillOpinion today to make the case that this year is different and that Congress should oppose the Trump budget request.

Following unlawful attacks against Venezuela and Iran, the commission of murder on the Caribbean Sea, and the issuance of casual threats against Greenland, Mexico, and Panama, among others, we can’t view this budget request as business as usual.
