Every Child Matters. Gichi-apiitendaagoziwag Akina Abinoonjiiyag. Chaque Enfant Compte. On Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, our staff, volunteers, and committee members wear orange to honour the Survivors of the residential school system, remember those who never came home, and recognize the enduring impacts of residential schools on Indigenous children, families, and communities. As an organization committed to working alongside Indigenous children, youth, and families across Turtle Island, we are reminded that every child matters. Earlier this week, our team came together for an all-staff learning session that provided space to listen, reflect, and learn through a guided sharing circle. Together, we explored the importance of truth-telling, the value of listening to Indigenous voices and lived experiences, and our individual and collective responsibilities in the work of reconciliation. Reconciliation requires ongoing learning, action, and accountability. Our work continues through outreach programming in Indigenous communities and schools across Northern Ontario, our Indigenous Access Admission Policy, guidance from our Indigenous Advisory and Indigenous Initiatives Steering Committees, and our commitment to incorporating Two-Eyed Seeing into our programs and practices. The artwork featured here was created by Shaylene Restoule, a former staff member and multimedia artist from Wikwemikong Unceded Territory. Inspired by the Turtle Island Creation Story and the teachings of braided Sweetgrass, the design symbolizes the interconnectedness of all life on Turtle Island, honours the lives lost through the residential school system, and reflects the seven generations before us and the seven generations yet to come. Today, we remember the children who never came home, honour Survivors, and continue our responsibility to listen, learn, and act.

Calling all night sky lovers! There’s a good reason to look up this week! 🪐 Saturn reaches opposition on October 4, making the next few nights a great time to spot it. So, what exactly is opposition? It happens when Earth passes between the Sun and Saturn. From our perspective, Saturn is on the opposite side of the sky from the Sun. That means it rises around sunset, stays visible all night and sets around sunrise. Saturn is also near its closest point to Earth for the year, so it’ll appear especially bright. You can spot it with the naked eye as a bright point of light, but if you have a telescope, take it out! Even a small telescope can reveal Saturn’s famous rings. 🔭 And the photos? Both were captured by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft as it approached Saturn. The first was taken in 2002, when Cassini was still 285 million km from the planet. The second was captured in 2004 from 47.7 million km away, just a few months before Cassini entered orbit around Saturn. Clear skies this week? Look up! 📷: NASA/JPL/Southwest Research Institute
