ALT Schematic illustration of mitochondria-derived component delivery and cellular metabolic activation by Trans MIT. Delivery of mitochondria-derived components into cells enhances energy metabolism, including the TCA cycle, mitochondrial respiration, and ATP production. Provided by Hokkaido University

ALT Energy paradox during REM sleep. During REM sleep in mice, cerebral blood volume and astrocytic pyruvate increased, whereas neuronal ATP decreased. The findings reveal distinct changes in blood flow and energy metabolism among blood vessels, astrocytes, and neurons during REM sleep. Provided by Tohoku University

ALT Plant growth at 48 days after sowing. Visual images of plants cultivated under ambient CO2 concentration (381 ± 14 µmol mol−1) (a), total leaf area at 48 days after sowing (b), and total shoot dry weight (c). Visual images of plants cultivated under elevated CO2 concentration (549 ± 23 µmol mol−1) (d), total leaf area (e), and total shoot dry weight (f). Data are presented as mean ± SE, and individual measurements are shown as black dots. ns, not significant (p > 0.05); *p < 0.05; **p < 0.01; ***p < 0.001; ****p < 0.0001. Multiple comparisons were performed using Dunnett's two-tailed test based on measurements from six plants per line. ALT A mother slender shrew (Sorex gracillimus) and her newborn pups born in captivity. The mother is shown at the upper right, and the pups at the lower left. Adults weigh approximately 3-4 g, making this species the second smallest of the four shrew species inhabiting Hokkaido. Provided by Hokkaido University

ALT Limnospondylus ajimuensis is believed to have inhabited the lakes and marshes of the Anshin-in region approximately 3.5 million years ago, when the climate was warmer and more humid than it is today. Meanwhile, the rivers of the present-day Anshin-in region are home to the extant Japanese giant salamander (Andrias japonicus), a species endemic to Japan.
