📰 Professional Update 📰 I’m thrilled to announce that I am joining the University of Texas at Arlington Psychology Department as an Assistant Professor starting in Fall 2025!

🚨fantastic post doc opportunity here!!🚨 As a bonus, I’m involved in this project and can say it’s a can’t miss opportunity to combine brain imaging, EEG, and spatial navigation with top notch collaborators! Reach out with questions!

@ashnkrause is hard at work developing a dissertation, which will empirically exam these notions of place and place coherence. So stay tuned for some hard data! More examples of things that Steve thinks are places that most other people do not below:

🚨New paper alert🚨 tandfonline.com/eprint/APYG6… This one's a bit different! Led by stellar PhD candidate @ashnkrause who has taught me more about social psychology than anyone else. First - a question: Is a ship a place?

🚨I am recruiting PhD students!🚨 (Please re-post this!) If you are interested in #spatialNavigation, #fMRI, #aging, #virtualReality, #AlzheimersDisease and more, please consider applying to work with me! IMPORTANT: Please email me prior to applying!

A commentary in @NatureHumBehav from @RHeersmink makes the case that using LLMs could impair our ability to think critically and write well. He makes a strong and clear case, analogizing LLMs to GPS/calculators. But I think he misses the opportunity... nature.com/articles/s41562-0…

Really grateful to be part of such an amazing team - @Eliany_Perez_ @yukselace @JeffreyKunath @adamjbarnas @chengsi_yi and Ashish Sahoo. Makes the work worth doing.

A @ScannLab preprint and first first-author submission from star grad student @yukselace!

Thrilled to announce that @ScannLab graduate student @Eliany_Perez_ has been awarded a Leighton E. Cluff Aging research award for her original manuscript on decision-making and aging. Congrats, Eliany! uff.ufl.edu/giving-opportuni…

I'm developing a new graduate course this semester where we discuss (and apply!) advanced methods in f/MRI. I'm having a lot of fun picking papers, but I'm also assembling a list of imaging resources for novice -> intermediate -> advanced imagers! github.com/smweis/methods_in…

Now out in the Journal of Cognition!! @ScannLab research led by Adam Barnas! When you see a sign, or look at your GPS, you might be guided by spatial directions, which help show you the way to go. 1/x

@ScannLab PhD student @Eliany_Perez_ leading a really cool project here, funded by @SRNDNA to examine variability in decision making and spatial navigation behavior in older adults (with and without AD). Also featuring @PeterKvam , @dawnbowersphd, @natalie_ebner and Adam Barnas

The @ScannLab is coming to @Psychonomic_Soc #psynom23! Presentations on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Can't make it? We got you. go.ufl.edu/psynom23 for all lab posters! Find us here, too: @a_a_d_d_a_a_m_m, @Eliany_Perez_, @yukselace, @JeffreyKunath

Now out in @WIREs_Reviews with @natalie_ebner and @SeidlerRachael, a new framework (LOST) for guiding spatial navigation support and enhancement in older adults. wires.onlinelibrary.wiley.co…

First R01 (internally) submitted (after missing the last deadline!). Into the ether. We celebrate submissions in the SCANN lab, so time to enjoy, until Psychonomics prep anyway!

@Eliany_Perez_ crushed her qualifying exam today and I couldn’t be more proud; though honestly it feels as though I’m just along for the ride of her brilliance. First @ScannLab PhD student to reach that benchmark!

Kind of unlike me, but throwing this out there - I'll have an extra day after Psychonomics (Monday, 11/20) in the San Francisco vicinity. Would anyone in the area want to host me for a lab visit / talk?
