Anybody else waiting for the new Jones Act Waiver to drop to see how the US merchant marine and American maritime sector get screwed over again by Stephen Miller and Kevin Hassett?

It's fantastic that the USS Texas is being preserved. That's because the folks in Texas have a special respect for an innovative ship that served so bravely and carried their name.
So why is it a country cannot do the same for its flagship?

USS Texas (BB-35) sits under floodlights in a Galveston dry dock, midway through the most extensive rebuild of her 110-plus year life.
She is the last dreadnought battleship left on Earth, and the only ship in the world to have fought in both World Wars. From the North Sea in 1918 to the invasion beaches of Normandy and Southern France in 1944, then on to Iwo Jima and Okinawa in 1945, Texas carried her crew through nearly every major amphibious campaign of the Atlantic and Pacific without ever hauling down her flag. She lost just one sailor to enemy fire across all of it.
Few remember that Texas was also a technological pioneer. She was the first U.S. battleship built with 14-inch guns, the first to mount anti-aircraft weapons, the first to launch an aircraft, and among the earliest warships in the Navy to carry radar. By the time she was decommissioned on April 21, 1948, she had already rewritten the rules of naval gunnery twice over.
That same day, Texas became something else entirely: the first battleship in the world preserved as a permanent museum ship. Every battlewagon that followed her into retirement — Alabama, North Carolina, Massachusetts, the Iowa-class ships — did so because Texas proved it could be done first.
This photo, taken in October 2022 at Gulf Copper's Galveston yard, captures her a few weeks into a rebuild that would eventually replace over 700 tons of steel and consume more than 400,000 labor hours.
Decades of corrosion at her old berth near San Jacinto had left her listing hard to starboard; without this dry dock, she likely wouldn't have survived another decade afloat. She's since been refloated, and the Battleship Texas Foundation has secured her a permanent new home at Pier 15 in the Port of Galveston, with a public reopening targeted for late 2026. After more than a century, America's first battleship museum is finally getting the one thing she never had — a home built to last.

Sounds more like Mr. Mixon is seeking only to determine scrap value of hull (Coffey said $1-2M) and apparently also market value of artifacts (!?); not seeking bids (yet)...
Okaloosa County announced today that it intends to obtain bids to determine the scrap value of the SS United States, including pricing for major components, such as the funnels to be sold on the open market if deployment does not proceed.
This is a striking development, especially given that just days ago the county was publicly assuring stakeholders through press releases and media interviews that the project was in its final stages of approval and still on track for deployment, pending weather and routine variables.
So what changed?
If the county is truly moving full steam ahead, why introduce contingency planning that points so clearly toward dismantling the ship?
At the same time, the Conservancy continues to suggest that a museum remains possible under its stewardship.
Now, with the county openly acknowledging that artifacts originally intended for a museum may instead be priced and sold, it strongly signals that the museum concept, as proposed, is no longer a realistic path forward.
The reality is simple: there is no museum without the ship.
If the SS United States is scrapped, the opportunity for a land based museum honoring the ship is lost entirely. For those who believe in that vision, preservation of the vessel itself is not optional, it is essential.
Here’s how you can help:
Contact your elected officials. Make it clear that you oppose the destruction of an irreplaceable piece of American history and that the SS United States deserves to be preserved, not dismantled

All my love and congratulations to @NASA and @NASAArtemis crew (and everyone involved) for a successful mission!!!! Making the impossible look easy! -B #NASA
The lawyer who filed the Coalition's case against Okaloosa County in the federal court in Pensacola has this to say about the etymology of a certain fairly obSCURE biological term. (But it's all Greek to me. —Editor)

In 1952, Capt. Royce Williams left USS ORISKANY to engage in the dogfight for which he won the #CMH.
In 1952, SSUS made her maiden voyage.
ORISKANY still holds the record as the world's largest artificial reef.
💡Let's honor both Capt. Williams and SSUS and keep it that way.
Pushing downward, actually...
"As the SS United States Conservancy advances plans for our future museum and visitor experience, Florida’s Okaloosa County is readying the ship for her next voyage." Next voyage, huh?

Replying to @Save_SS_US
"...never stood a chance"?
Q: If our loss was so foreseeable, why did the County wait until AFTER the suit was dismissed to make their sanctions motion?
A: "...frankly, I did not want to look like a fool if Judge Rodgers denied the motion to dismiss..."
