In schools across Tibet, students are forced to learn the Chinese Communist Party's propaganda on Tibet's history. Shortly after the start of the new school year, the Chinese authorities held the so-called "National Defense Education Day," where the motto was "Remembering the dark history, honoring the great changes, and striving to become people of the new era." Beijing alone is determining what parts of #Tibet's history students learn, systematically erasing #China's history of occupation and repression in Tibet and attempting to militarize Tibetan children. Congratulations Amala! This morning, in recognition of her lifelong dedication to the welfare and care of Tibetan children, Kasur Jetsun Pema was awarded the Christmas Humphreys Award by the Buddhist Society of Britain. Most famously known as the former leader of the Tibetan Children’s Village in Dharamsala, for over 60 years Jetsun Pema la has devoted her life to the support and education of #Tibetan children in exile. Thubten Wangchen, Representative of His Holiness the @DalaiLama & the Central Tibetan Administration for Latin America, and ICT President Tencho Gyatso's visit to Panama from Sep. 30 to Oct. 2. From conversations with Panamanian government officials and civil society organizations to exchanges with journalists, students, scholars, community leaders, and other key stakeholders, the visit created opportunities to raise awareness about the situation in Tibet and China’s efforts to destroy Tibet’s distinct cultural, religious, and linguistic identity and heritage. Among the highlights of their visit was the distinct honor of meeting with Ambassador Kevin Marino Cabrera, the U.S. Ambassador to Panama, for a meaningful conversation on the importance of religious freedom and the preservation of language, culture, and identity. The visit also gave Panamanians an opportunity to hear directly from the two Tibetan leaders about the experiences of Tibetans in exile and those living under Chinese oppression in Tibet. These stories and perspectives reached broader audiences through screenings of two documentaries, Free Tibet: Voices in Exile and The Sun Behind the Clouds, in Panama City and Colón. 24 years ago today President George W. Bush signed the hugely influential Tibet Policy Act (TPA) into law. The law created the position of the US Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues, encouraged Sino-Tibetan dialogue, and guaranteed financial support for Tibet. Followed by the #Tibet Policy and Support Act of 2020 and the Resolve Tibet Act of 2024, the TPA set the stage for US-Tibet legislation.
