Activists against decimation of British food by opening floodgates to lower regulated food. Farms will go bust. Consumers get less choice and higher prices

Joined June 2020
Brexit let subsidised EU farmers undercut British ones - and new trade deals flooded us with cheaper, lower-standard imports from elsewhere. 🇬🇧 farmers lost support, face Brexit red tape on exports and can’t compete. Britain is more food insecure and lost control of food supply
Exactly 10 years since the Brexit vote, the verdict is in.

🚨 Ukraine has gathered clear proof that Starlink is being ordered to scupper Ukrainian operations. It is horrific betrayal. This is why all US technology needs to be replaced by European technology for critical European systems - UK included. ALL of it.
Latest: Zelenskyy tells reporters over WhatsApp that restrictions on Ukraine's Starlink systems remain. Interceptor drones can't function, logistics and operations hobbled. The maximum speed is 161 kph; "exceeding this limit causes the Starlink connection to cut out completely, resulting in the loss of the drone." He says Ukraine has done tests to determine whether SpaceX is truly facing technical issues, as has been told Kyiv by the US side, or if this is a "deliberate operation... to restrict us, cut us off, and prevent us from defending ourselves and protecting our people, both at the front and among the civilian population." He says Ukraine "sent a couple of vehicles equipped with Starlink terminals into European Union territory." "They moved at speeds exceeding 180kph, and the Starlink systems worked perfectly. We have the relevant logs and evidence to prove this." He adds: "The conclusion is clear: the restrictions are in effect within Ukraine but do not apply within the European Union. In other words, this is a planned operation."

This is what Brexit is doing to British food exports and food security. Food and drink exports to the EU are down by more than a third. Sugar: -70% Eggs/egg products: -65% Poultry: -53% The EU still buys most of our agri-food exports, but Brexit put barriers in the way of selling to it. Meanwhile imports rise and Britain’s food trade deficit has ballooned. We were promised global Britain. British farmers got global competition at home and barriers to their best market abroad. Food security is national security. Rebuilding British farming means rebuilding access to Europe.

Wow… is this true @elonmusk ?
EXCLUSIVE: Elon Musk approached Donald Trump with the idea of slowing down Starlink in Ukraine, The Telegraph can reveal. The billionaire tech entrepreneur approached the US president with the proposal to introduce speed limits on the system, which hampered Ukraine’s drone defences, according to four sources familiar with the discussions. 🔗 telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2…

🗣️ "It is not farming, it is just a mess." Dairy farmer Derek Banbury has some strong views about what his neighbour, Derek Gow, is doing with his land. The two Devon farmers have very different approaches. One believes in intensive farming to produce food, while the other has turned his farm over to nature restoration. Now their relationship is the subject of a new documentary, Derek vs Derek, filmed over four years, which explores the challenges facing both farms... READ MORE: ow.ly/zqwa50ZWsLK

Yep. As I have been warning for a decade (outside of the EU) no EU manufacturer is ever going to sell to British consignees on anything other than Ex Works (come & get it) terms .. Whereas conversely no EU consignee is ever going to buy anything from the GB unless on DDP or DDU (you're responsible for getting it to my door) terms. The British consumer will need to again (pre SM/CU) get used to less (choice) for more cost (*especially if Brexit is ever fully done*) while GB's exporters will continue to sell far less. ..& less again still, as EU importers turn progressively more towards fellow EU (internal market) suppliers.

This is one of the many to come! Just waiting for the day we on this plague island full of numpties called the Atlantic Archipelago, who wish to get goods made within Europe will have to drive to the manufacturers location and collect these items and return, as we did pre 1980s!

🚨 Kemi Badenoch says unnamed farmers have persuaded her to rip up any UK–EU agrifood agreement. But the NFU has welcomed the principle of a closer relationship that reduces trade friction, while rightly demanding carve-outs, influence and a workable transition. So a direct question for @ProagriLtd and @NFUtweets: Do you support Badenoch’s pledge to destroy the entire agreement, or do you want the government to negotiate a deal that protects British production while restoring access to our largest food market? British farm sales to the EU have fallen sharply since Brexit. Farmers must not be used as an excuse to preserve the barriers damaging British farming.

Like a rabbit 🐇 caught in the headlights, the British bunny 🐰 left the European warren in search of Brexit sovereignty.. Now it faces a choice: remain frozen while China’s subsidised car industry drives straight over British manufacturing or run home to Europe and beg to be let back in. This is Brexit reality: leaving the protection of the warren, only to discover we are smaller and more vulnerable alone.

Brexit + Covid + Putin’s war in Ukraine + Trump’s economic nationalism = a lethal cocktail for British farming. The treatment is clear: Free Britain from the Brexit trap. Rejoin Europe. Rebuild our resilience. Restore our future.
🚨 REJOINING THE EU WOULD FORCE A RETHINK OF LABOUR’S FAMILY FARM TAX EU membership would not automatically abolish inheritance tax or require Britain to restore the old Agricultural Property Relief system. Taxation remains largely a national responsibility. But rejoining would expose a fundamental contradiction in Labour’s policy. Since Brexit, APR has been restricted to agricultural property in the UK. Before that change, the relief had been extended across the European Economic Area to comply with EU law. If Britain reapplied for membership, Brussels would examine whether European and British farmers and investors were being treated equally and whether our tax system obstructed the free movement of capital. Britain would also normally return to the Common Agricultural Policy, although the precise support arrangements and transition would be negotiated. The CAP is intended to sustain food production, rural communities and farming across generations. That sits uneasily beside a tax policy forcing viable family farms to sell land simply to meet an inheritance-tax bill. Labour would face a choice: defend a policy that accelerates consolidation and weakens food security, or design a system that protects genuine working farms while preventing abuse. That could mean relief tied to active farming, continued agricultural use and clawback provisions when land is sold or developed. Rejoining would not automatically repeal the farm tax but it would make its contradictions much harder to defend. Food security, environmental protection and the survival of family farming must be treated as public goods and not collateral damage in a Treasury spreadsheet.

France’s response to devastating heat/drought 👉 €1 bn of emergency support for farmers. British farmers face same weather but are hit with IHT changes, an inadequate SFI lottery and trade deals exposing us to cheaper imports produced to standards that would be illegal here. 🧵
🚜 This is what a tax against growth looks like. A @CLAtweets survey of 700 rural family businesses found: 🚜 89% have paused investment 🚜 64% of those cancelling projects have abandoned plans worth more than £50,000 🚜 More than a third have withheld over £150,000 🚜 85% say the £2.5 million allowance does not cover their business 🚜 Almost half expect to sell at least a quarter of their land 🚜 70% fear their business will not survive another decade These are not passive assets sitting in a bank account. They are working farms: asset rich but often desperately cash poor. Farmers are cancelling machinery purchases, holiday accommodation, solar panels, crop production and reservoirs desperately needed to withstand drought. Some are even allowing buildings and land to deteriorate because the Government has created a financial incentive to prevent their businesses increasing in value. Hannah Darby’s family has shelved a £200,000 holiday let conversion and a 16kW solar installation. An inheritance tax bill approaching £500,000 could force them to sell land and leave their farm unviable. The entire APR/BPR reform is forecast to raise only about £295 million a year by 2030–31. Yet it is already freezing private investment, weakening food production, obstructing renewable energy and destroying confidence throughout the rural economy. The Government’s impact assessment claimed the policy would have no significant macroeconomic effect. The real economy is now delivering its verdict. If @andyburnham and @JohnHealey_MP genuinely want growth in every postcode, they must reverse this self defeating tax in the autumn Budget. You cannot tax working family farms into shrinking and call it economic growth.

France is protecting its capacity to produce food. Britain is actively undermining its own. Food security is national security but only if your government understands that farms must survive to provide it.

🚨 WHY FOOD SECURITY MATTERS There’s a storm gathering around the global food system. El Niño and the inflationary effects of the Iran war = global food-price shock lasting into 2028. This matters enormously to Britain. 🧵

Brexit Britain is island nation increasingly dependent on other countries to supply most of our food. But climate change doesn’t respect borders. Neither do wars, energy shocks or disrupted shipping. This is why we keep saying that food security is national security.

Imports can’t replace the need for productive capacity. Once farms disappear, breeding herds are dispersed, growers stop planting 👉 food-processing biz close, capacity can’t be switched back on when a crisis arrives. A full supermarket shelf is the end of a production system.

🚨 BREXIT’S BORDER MASOCHISM This is what taking back control delivered to Britain’s meat industry: ❌ New certificates ❌ Duplicate inspections ❌ Refrigerated lorries delayed ❌ Shorter shelf life ❌ Higher veterinary and transport costs ❌ British consignments rejected over minute defects Brexit created an entire border bureaucracy around legitimate, traceable trade that previously moved freely. ☠️ Yet illegal meat, the genuine biosecurity threat, continues to exploit the holes in Britain’s post-Brexit border regime. Brexit is punishing compliant British exporters while failing to manage the real risk. 👏 The quickest fix is dynamic SPS alignment to eliminate routine checks, while simultaneously negotiating entry into the single market and customs union.

You cannot demand cheap food, more wildlife, higher welfare, lower emissions and beautiful countryside while refusing to pay the people delivering them enough to remain in business. Bankrupting the farmer destroys food resilience and nature.

You don’t understand We are businesses often getting paid below the cost of production There is no £ for doing good We are being asked to cheapen food or go out of business It’s not a matter of goodwill It’s a collapse of any kind of system that would make it possible
