Why it matters beyond Bitcoin: curtailment rises as wind build-out outpaces the grid. EirGrid has said surplus renewable generation could exceed 20% of available capacity by 2030 absent further flexibility.
Flexible demand is one lever, alongside storage and interconnection. It also runs into private wires, grid access, and how renewable support schemes are designed.

We've just published this in Energy Economics:
Sarnecki, M. & Burke, N. (2026). "Bitcoin Mining as Supply-Side Flexibility in Irish Wind Energy Integration"
In 2024, EirGrid dispatched down 10.1% of Ireland's available wind. In 2025, 11.4%. That is clean power we could have generated but were not able to use.
Can a co-located Bitcoin miner turn some of it into revenue?

Replying to @LawrenceLepard
For years, critics could get away with dismissal because Bitcoin was still climbing the wall of disbelief. Their “innocents will be hurt” line was a shield, buying them time to stay inside the collapsing fiat frame while looking morally superior.
But that shield is breaking. Why? Because the narrative has inverted. The “innocents” aren’t being hurt by Bitcoin speculation - they’re being hurt by not having Bitcoin. Every day they remain in fiat, they bleed purchasing power, savings, and dignity. The electrician Lepard mentions is living proof that Bitcoin isn’t theoretical - it’s the survival exit.
This is why his patience is gone. The critics aren’t harmless skeptics anymore - they’re obstructors of exit. They aren’t debating asset prices - they’re keeping working people trapped in a burning building while pretending to warn them about the fire escape.
Lepard is saying out loud what many of us already know but don’t fully articulate yet. The era of tolerance is over. The phase where skeptics could posture without consequence is closing. From here on, every attack on Bitcoin is functionally an attack on people’s right to escape systemic theft.
Bitcoin just shifted from an economic debate to a civilizational morality line.

If you happen to be one of the people who generated 152x the gains of the world’s best hedge fund, you are an idiot according to @ianguider. @businessposthq do you have an intellectually curious person to write about bitcoin?
Why do we put up with bad journalism. When will we hold ‘expert’ financial journalists to account. Since @ianguider first starting laughing at bitcoin, it has grown 80,600%. 22x better than Nvidia, 273x better than the S&P500 and 152x the best Hedge fund on the planet.

This piece by the @irishexaminer was published on the same day as Vice-President Vance told a Bitcoin conference in Vegas that Bitcoin has become a strategically important asset for the US.
Monetary Darwinism at play, and the gap opening on both sides of the Atlantic is scary.
