Canada 🇨🇦 is standing up to Trump’s coercion, reducing its dependence on the US, joining European defence procurement and pursuing the deepest possible economic and security partnership with the EU.
Britain 🇬🇧 is being advised to smile, submit and hope Trump’s successor is nicer.
Carney has presented international cooperation as an assertion of Canadian sovereignty, not its surrender, and Canadians have rewarded him.
Burnham must choose between two models:
🇨🇦 Carney’s confident sovereignty through European and middle-power alliances.
🇬🇧 Baker’s frightened dependency in which Britain remains America’s “largest aircraft carrier”.
Burnham must mirror Carney:
1. Tell the country the world has changed.
2. Remove the Brexit red lines.
3. Stand up to Trump.
4. Rebuild Britain’s European relationship.
5. Turn economic security into a national mission.

Big money political donations subvert democracy. They must be banned and classed as serious criminal offences. Burnham needs to start defending our democracy. He had the opportunity but caved in to the union bosses. Now he must act. Democracy is for the people. It must not be a plaything of the super-rich.

I don't know when it happened, probably it was Brexit, but so much of the diversity of opinion in the UK press has gone, replaced by groupthink, this means the loss of @Simon_Nixon, @DAaronovitch, @OborneTweets and so many more but it means the entire thing can face in the wrong direction. There is intolerance, deep unhappiness and a nastiness that is new. Just look at the front pages.

“These boats are coming because of Brexit. I will not tolerate men in balaclavas blocking off ports, men and women screaming abuse at police or police being hurt and their vehicles smashed. Whilst having enormous sympathy for genuine refugees I will not tolerate illegal immigration. Today I will be speaking to my EU counterparts about fast-track Brexit reversal. Inevitably, the creeps in masks in Dover yesterday were the typical wife-beaters’ brigade.
I’m sick of this being written off to appease the country’s racism. THESE “fighting age” useless men are the real threat to our country.
We have covered both Patriot Platform and Danny Tommo’s previous activity in the Raise the Colours movement.
In August we revealed the violent pasts of Tommo’s “handpicked” men, who despite being subject to “rigorous checks” and prioritising “quality over quantity”, have multiple convictions including violence against women.
